How to convert number to text in Excel

In Excel, there are several methods for converting numbers to text. The TEXT function in Excel is used to translate integers into text names. One technique to convert numbers to text is to use the text function. To do this, all we need to do is choose the numbers we want to convert to text and the format in which we want to do it. If we choose Zero, the value will remain the same but be converted to text. If we alter the format, the value will also change but remain converted to text.

Excel Text Function: Number to text Conversion:

Using a user-specified format, the Excel Text Function turns a provided integer to text. The function's syntax is as follows:

TEXT(value, format_text)

Where,

Value is the numeric value that will be converted to text,

Format_text is a text string that specifies the formatting that will be applied to the value that has been provided.

Examples of the Excel Text Function being used to convert a straightforward number, a currency, a date, and a time into text are shown in the spreadsheet below:

Excel Dollar Function: Number to text Conversion

The Excel Dollar Function translates a rounded integer to text in a currency format after rounding it to a given number of decimal places. The function's syntax is as follows:

DOLLAR( number, [decimals])

The number that will be converted to text is number;

the [decimals] parameter, which is optional, defines how many decimal places will be displayed after the decimal point. (If [decimals] is omitted, the default value of 2 is used.)

Three instances of the Excel Dollar Function are shown in Column B of the spreadsheet below:

Please be aware that the Dollar function result's currency format depends on your computer's settings.

Excel Fixed Function: Number to text Conversion

The Excel Fixed Function translates a rounded integer to text after rounding it to a preset number of decimal places. The function's syntax is as follows:

FIXED( number, [decimals], [no commas])

number is the numeric value that will be converted to text;

[decimals] is an optional argument that clearly states the number of decimal places to be shown just after decimal point (if excluded, the [decimals] argument is set to the default value of 2);

[no commas] is an optional logical argument that indicates whether or not the returned text should use commas to separate groups of digits (such as thousands, millions, etc.) (TRUE = no commas; FALE = add commas)

Excel Text to Columns: Turning a Number to Text

Use the Excel Text to Columns function instead if you wish to convert an entire column of Excel numbers to text.

However, because the Text to Columns command only works on one column at a time, this approach could be less helpful if your data covers many columns.

To convert numbers to text using Excel Text to Columns:

Decide the range(s) of cells you wish to convert (these must not span more than one column).

Choose the Text to Columns option under the Data tab on the Excel ribbon.

The wizard for Converting Text to Columns will launch as a result. This contains:

Click Next > after making sure the Delimited option is chosen.

Ensure that none of the Delimiters are chosen, then click Next > once again.

A list of column data formats should now be available to you. After selecting Text, press the Finish button.
