WPS Office Suite Supports Plenty4All’s Efforts to Empower and Educate Communities Lacking Critical Resources

Development Organization Uses WPS Office to Create and Share Content for Training, Instruction and Collaboration

“ I feel that Microsoft is just too demanding of the computer, too ‘nosy’ and interfering. In addition, Microsoft doesn’t continue support for other apps like Turbo Tax and you’re constantly having to pay for upgrades and/or the system crashes and you end up getting lost in customer support voicemail. ”

- Jack SoRelle, CEO, Plenty4All

The Problem

Plenty4All is one of the few organizations in the world exclusively committed to delivering the resources required for communities to achieve self-sustenance and growth. Bringing together grassroots rural communities, coops and entrepreneurs, the organization fosters a development program that teaches community members how to implement tools for producing food, water and energy, while creating their own micro businesses to generate revenue and profits that can be reinvested into the community.

Plenty4All, headquartered in Toledo, Ohio had projects underway in multiple countries and needed an office software platform that would support its collaboration, content generation and education efforts. Jack SoRelle, CEO of Plenty4All, works directly with partners in each country to establish development programs that support their objectives for growth.

For example, in Nepal, the goal is to expand a recently built IT Center with a hands on learning lab where elders, teachers and children can learn about internet technology. In Kenya, a country that is energy deprived, Plenty4All is working with a coop partner to implement a 12Volt Solar Electronic power back-up system that can charge cells phones and provide light at night to read and study with.

During the day water pumps can be operated, irrigating fields and saving women, men and children from walking long distance for bad or expensive water.

“Implementing these programs and helping community members establish small micro businesses requires a great deal of education and training,” said SoRelle. “Most are first time entrepreneurs, eager for the opportunity to earn income to help support their families, but in need of support and training to thrive. Having an office software suite in place is essential for creating educational presentations, guides on such topics as how to dry and can food, spreadsheets for tracking information among partners and the much needed collaboration across global borders.”

SoRelle considered using MS Office, but ultimately decided to search for an alternate solution for several reasons. “I feel that Microsoft is just too demanding of the computer, too ‘nosy’ and interfering,” he says. “In addition, Microsoft doesn’t continue support for other apps like Turbo Tax and you’re constantly having to pay for upgrades and/or the system crashes and you end up getting lost in customer support voicemail.”

The Solution

After discovering WPS Office through the free sponsored access version, SoRelle was convinced WPS was a solution he could work with. At first he had some stalled attempts at getting the software to work properly, but was happy to speak live with a company representative who was able to get him up and running successfully. Now he and his partners are operating with the premium version of WPS Office.

Since installing the software, SoRelle has found WPS Office to be very easy to work with, in a format he’s familiar with. Much of the content generated for education and training is created in Writer or Presentations, and shared with his partners using Google Drive. He says he’d like to use Spreadsheets more to track projects with partners so as to keep all activity as transparent as possible.

“We’re currently planning to build out our IT centers with hands on labs, and WPS Office will be a valuable component to facilitate learning in the lab environment,” said SoRelle. “We would also like to start using the mobile version to extend the instructional power and capacity we deliver to community members going forward.”
