How to use rank function in excel

The rank function ranks any given number in whether ascending or descending order from a given set of values. If you are wondering how to use rank function in excel, this is the article for you.

This example will cover two aspect of the rank function. One is the ascending value and the other is descending value of the rank function. Reading it completely will put an end to your question how to use rank function in excel.

Use rank function in ascending order

1. Open the file you wish to use rank function.

2. Click on the cell D12 where you want to get the rank result.

3. Type “=rank”

4. Press Tab. The rank function is now active.

5. Click on the number you wish to rank. In this case, let’s take 500.

6. Put comma. Now for the range, bring your cursor to the cell C5, click and hold left mouse and drag down to C10.

7. Now put comma and type 1 for ascending order.

8. Hit Enter. The number 500 is ranked in ascending order.

Use rank function in descending order

1. Open the file you wish to use rank function.

2. Click on the cell D12 where you want to get the rank result.

3. Type “=rank”

4. Press Tab. The rank function is now active.

5. Click on the number you wish to rank. In this case, let’s take 900.

6. Put comma. Now for the range, bring your cursor to the cell C5, click and hold left mouse and drag down to C10.

7. Now put comma and type 0 for descending order.

8. Hit Enter. The number 900 is ranked in ascending order.

Use rank function from option

1. Open the file you wish to use rank function.

2. Click on the cell D12 where you want to get the rank result.

3. Now click Formula tab. The options under this tab appears.

4. Now click More Functions button.

5. Now hover your mouse over Statistical. The drop down list appears.

6. Now find and select Rank function.

7. Click it. The dialogue box appears.

8. In the number field, you can select the number you wish to rank using arrow button. The Ref can be used to put the range of cell from C5 to C10, and the order can be ascending or descending by inserting 0 or 1. Let’s rank number 400 in ascending orde. The values in the dialogue box should look like this.

9. Hit Ok. The number 400 is ranked in ascending order.
