Microsoft Word
Device & OS

Before you start

Check the title bar at the top of your Word window to see if it says '[Compatibility Mode]'. If it does, older formatting rules are currently limiting your editing capabilities.

Solution 1Recommended

Convert the Document from Compatibility Mode

Compatibility Mode restricts newer features, including the standard rotation handle. Updating the document format restores this functionality.

When opening older .doc or early .docx files in newer versions of Word, the program enters Compatibility Mode. This disables certain modern formatting tools to prevent layout issues in older versions.

1
Open Document Info

Click on the 'File' tab in the top-left corner of the ribbon, then select 'Info' from the left-hand menu.

2
Convert the File

Click the 'Convert' button located next to Compatibility Mode. A prompt will appear confirming that the document will be upgraded to the newest file format.

3
Save and Test

Save the document. Click on your text box again, and the circular rotation handle should now appear at the top of the shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Convert option unavailable after selecting File > Info?

The Convert option only appears if the document is currently in Compatibility Mode. If the button is missing, your document is already in the newest format. The missing rotation handle might instead be due to document protection restrictions or a locked shape.

Can I rotate a text box to a specific degree manually?

Yes. Right-click the text box and select 'More Layout Options' or 'Format Shape'. Navigate to the Size tab, where you can type an exact degree number into the Rotation field.

Does rotating a text box change the layout of the rest of the document?

It depends on the text wrapping settings of the text box. If the text wrapping is set to 'In Line with Text', rotating it might cause layout shifts. Changing the text wrap to 'Square' or 'In Front of Text' allows it to rotate freely without disrupting surrounding paragraphs.
