- Scenario
- Creating or editing a two-column document layout where text needs to flow naturally to the bottom of the page.
- Observed behavior
- The text abruptly moves into the second column before the first column reaches the bottom margin, leaving unwanted blank space at the bottom of the first column.
Enable the 'Show/Hide ¶' feature on your Home tab to make hidden formatting marks, such as manual column breaks and section breaks, visible on your page.
Disable Widow/Orphan Control
Turn off the Widow/Orphan control setting to allow paragraphs to break freely at the bottom of the column, preventing text from jumping to the next column to keep lines together.
Widow/Orphan control is designed to prevent a single line of a paragraph from being stranded by itself at the top or bottom of a column. While useful, it often forces entire blocks of text into the next column, leaving empty space behind.
Highlight the text within your columns that is experiencing the flow issue, or press Ctrl+A to select the entire document.
Right-click the selected text and choose 'Paragraph' from the context menu to open the formatting dialog box.
Navigate to the 'Line and Page Breaks' tab at the top of the dialog box.
Deselect the checkbox labeled 'Widow/Orphan control' and click 'OK' to apply the changes. The text should now fill the bottom of the first column.
Remove Continuous Section Breaks
Delete continuous section breaks that force Word to automatically balance the height of newspaper-style columns.
Remove Manual Column Breaks
Check for and delete any manual column breaks that may have been accidentally inserted, forcing text into the next column.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Widow/Orphan control in document formatting?
Widow/Orphan control is a pagination setting that prevents a single line of a paragraph from appearing by itself at the top (widow) or bottom (orphan) of a page or column. It forces the text to jump to the next column or page to keep at least two lines together.
Why are my two columns perfectly balanced instead of filling the first column?
Columns automatically balance their heights if there is a 'Continuous Section Break' placed at the end of the text on that page. Deleting this section break will allow the first column to fill completely before the text moves to the second column.
How do I see hidden column breaks and section breaks?
You can reveal hidden formatting marks by going to the Home tab on your ribbon and clicking the 'Show/Hide ¶' (pilcrow) icon. This displays spaces, paragraph returns, column breaks, and section breaks so you can easily locate and delete them.
