- Product
- Microsoft SharePoint
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- A user copies an older SharePoint news post expecting it to be treated as new, but it is sorted by its original publication date.
- Observed behavior
- The copied post retains its historical publication date and original position, failing to move to the top of the news feed as a newly published item.
Before attempting to change page properties, ensure you have Site Editor or Site Owner permissions on the SharePoint site to modify page details and republish news posts.
Manually Update the First Published Date
Change the page properties of the copied news post so it is recognized as a brand-new item and sent to the top of the news feed.
By design, copying a SharePoint page duplicates all of its metadata, including the original First Published Date. To make the post appear at the top of your chronological news feed, you must manually adjust this date property to the current day and time.
Navigate to your SharePoint site, click on the gear icon (Settings), and select 'Site contents'. Open the 'Site Pages' library.
Locate the copied news post. Click the ellipsis (three dots) next to the file name, select 'More', and then click 'Properties'. Alternatively, open the page and click 'Page details' in the top command bar.
In the Page details pane on the right side of the screen, scroll down to find the 'First Published Date' field. Clear the old date and input the current date and time.
Close the Page details pane and click 'Republish' on the news post to apply the updated date to your SharePoint news feed.

Pin the News Post to the Top of the Feed
Override the chronological sorting of the News web part by manually pinning the copied post to the top of the list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a copied SharePoint page keep the old publication date?
By design, copying a page in SharePoint duplicates its exact metadata to preserve document history. This includes the original 'First Published Date.' It prevents historical content from accidentally appearing as breaking news unless manually changed.
Can I force a news post to stay at the top of the SharePoint feed indefinitely?
Yes. You can edit the News web part on your site, navigate to the 'Organize' section in the web part properties, and manually pin specific news posts to the top slots regardless of their publication date.
Does updating an existing news post change its position in the news feed?
No. Simply editing and republishing an existing news post updates its content but does not alter the 'First Published Date'. Therefore, its position in a chronologically sorted news feed remains exactly the same.
How do I find the page details to change the publication date?
While viewing or editing the news post, click on 'Page details' in the top command bar. A side panel will open on the right side of the screen where you can view and modify page properties, including the First Published Date.
