- Observed behavior
- The background images and graphics cannot be clicked, selected, or deleted from the main document editing view.
Ensure your document view is set to 'Print Layout' under the View tab so you can accurately see all headers, footers, and background graphics.
Delete Background Graphics via the Header and Footer
In most brochure templates, full-page background images are anchored to the header or footer layer to keep them behind the text. You must open this layer to delete them.
Template designers often place background elements in the header and footer so they automatically repeat across pages without disrupting the text flow of the main document.
Double-click the blank top or bottom margin of the page to activate the Header & Footer tools.
Click directly on the unwanted background image or graphic. You should see sizing handles appear around the edges of the image.
Press the 'Delete' or 'Backspace' key on your keyboard to remove the selected graphic.
Double-click anywhere in the main body text area of the document, or click the 'Close Header and Footer' button on the ribbon to return to normal editing.

Remove Watermarks and Page Colors
If the background is not an anchored image, it may have been applied as a document watermark or page color.
Use the Select Objects Tool
If the image is placed in the main document but set to 'Behind Text', standard clicking might not select it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I click or select the background image in my Word document?
To prevent accidental edits while typing, document creators often place background images in the header or footer layer. Because you are editing the main text layer by default, these images remain locked until you explicitly open the Header & Footer view.
Will deleting the background image ruin the layout of my brochure template?
In most cases, deleting a background image will only change the visual appearance and will not affect the layout of your text, shapes, or tables, as the background exists on an independent layer.
What if the background image is only on one page and not in the header?
If the image doesn't repeat on other pages, it might be inserted in the main body but formatted as 'Behind Text'. You can remove it by using the 'Select Objects' tool under the 'Home' tab's Editing group, which allows you to click on elements hidden behind text.
