- Product
- PowerPoint
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Adding specific sections of background music, voiceovers, or sound effects tailored to individual slides within a presentation.
- Observed behavior
- The presentation software retains the full original audio file when trimming settings are applied, allowing users to copy the audio object to other slides and adjust playback ranges independently.
Ensure your audio file is saved in a supported format (such as MP3, WAV, or M4A) and is accessible on your local drive before inserting it into your presentation.
Insert, Trim, and Copy Audio Across Slides
Use the built-in Trim Audio feature to duplicate your audio file across slides and assign specific playback sections to each one.
Because trimming an audio file in your presentation does not actually delete the trimmed portions, you can safely copy a single audio object to multiple slides. Once copied, you simply adjust the start and end markers on each slide to play a different section of the same original track.
Select your starting slide, navigate to the Insert tab on the top ribbon, click Audio, and choose the desired audio file from your device.
Click on the inserted audio icon to select it. Open the Playback tab on the ribbon, choose Trim Audio, adjust the green start and red end markers to frame the section you want, and click OK.
Right-click the trimmed audio object on your slide and select Copy (or press Ctrl+C). Navigate to the next slide where you want the next audio segment and Paste the object (Ctrl+V).
With the copied audio selected on the new slide, open Trim Audio again. Move the markers to highlight the new section for this specific slide. Repeat this process for all necessary slides, then Save the presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my presentation file size increase significantly after adding and trimming audio?
Even if you trim the audio to be very short, the presentation retains the entire original media file to allow for future non-destructive adjustments. To reduce file size, you can compress media through the presentation software's File menu options.
Can I make the trimmed audio play automatically when I switch to the slide?
Yes. Select the audio icon on the slide, go to the Playback or Audio Tools tab, and change the 'Start' option from 'In Click Sequence' or 'On Click' to 'Automatically'.
Will the trimmed portions be permanently deleted from my original MP3 file?
No, trimming inside the presentation software is completely non-destructive. Your original MP3, WAV, or M4A file saved on your computer remains completely unaltered.
