Outlook can place the sender and subject on one line when the message list becomes compact or the reading pane changes width. The control differs between new Outlook, Outlook on the web, and classic Outlook, so identify the version before changing the view.
Identify Which Outlook Layout Changed
If the interface has a New Outlook switch, note whether it is on. Also check whether the layout changed in every folder or only the Inbox; classic Outlook can save a separate view for each folder.
Put the Sender Name Above the Subject Line

- In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, open Settings > Mail > Layout and find Message list format. Choose Sender name first.
- In classic Outlook, open the affected folder, select View, and use Change View > Compact. Widen the message list or move the Reading Pane to the bottom if the two-line compact layout is collapsing.
- If classic Outlook still shows a custom one-line layout, select View > Reset View for that folder and confirm the reset.
- Check the Inbox and another mail folder. Apply the desired view to other folders only when you want the same layout everywhere.
Follow the relevant official guidance in Microsoft’s documentation, and verify the result before changing a wider deployment or replacing the original file.
Reset Only the Affected Folder in Classic Outlook
Conversation settings can change order but are not the same as message-list density. In classic Outlook, View > Conversation Settings > Show Senders Above the Subject controls which item appears first when the two-line display is active.
Use WPS Office Without Changing Outlook Mail Views
WPS Office cannot change Outlook’s message-list view because that layout belongs to the mail application. It remains a free, lightweight Microsoft Office-compatible alternative for local DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF work.

Writer, Spreadsheets, Presentation, PDF tools, and AI-assisted features provide a familiar, streamlined workspace and an easy everyday migration path. Test macros, specialized add-ins, protected files, and Microsoft-only cloud integrations before replacing a critical Microsoft 365 workflow.
Outlook Message List FAQs
Why did Outlook suddenly put sender and subject on one line?
A view reset, reading-pane change, narrow window, or message-list density setting can collapse the compact two-line layout.
Does Reset View delete emails?
No. It resets the selected folder’s display settings, such as columns, grouping, and arrangement; it does not delete messages.
Why did the change affect only my Inbox?
Classic Outlook stores views by folder. Apply or reset the view in each affected folder, or use the view-management tools to apply one view more broadly.
Can I show the subject above the sender instead?
Yes. In classic Outlook, View > Conversation Settings includes Show Senders Above the Subject. In new Outlook, choose Subject first under Message list format.
