This guide walks you through function problems using Microsoft-supported steps first, with WPS only where it genuinely helps.
Problem Description: Revert Recent Behavior Change
Hi all, I have noticed a change in behavior when inputting data to a column of cells with a data validation rule (accepts inputs matching entries in a column in a separate sheet, with autocomplete) and I am wondering if it is possible to revert this change back the previous behavior: Previously, when I pressed return after having typed enough characters in the cell to produce the desired autocomplete suggestion, the cell-highlight (the cell with green borders) would automatically move to the next cell in the same column. Now I have to press return twice to produce the same result - once to "accept" the highlighted autocomplete suggestion and once to move the highlight one cell down. I am sure some recent update is to blame, as this behavior has arisen sometime between mid-december last year and now. I hope it possible to resolve this - any help is appreciated. Best regards, Jonas
Quick Answer for Office Won't Complete Task
Recent application updates may have altered how Excel handles data validation and autocomplete during cell entry.
Likely Causes Behind Common Function Problems Triggers
The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.
Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger function problems.
A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.
Recommended Solution: Transferring Office License Safely
When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.
To address this, navigate through Excel options to locate settings governing data validation rules and autocomplete behavior, adjusting them to match your preferred workflow.
Search for the latest software updates or cumulative patches, as Microsoft frequently releases fixes that modify or restore default interface behaviors.
Should the modified functionality persist and disrupt your data entry process, reach out to Microsoft Support directly to obtain version-specific guidance and potential configuration workarounds tailored to your current build.
Alternative Solutions for Broader Function Problems Workarounds
Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.
Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.
Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.
Working with WPS Office: Using WPS While Office Is Unavailable

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.
Download and install WPS Office from the official website.
Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.
Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.
Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.
If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.
Prevention Tips for Avoiding Repeat Function Problems
Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.
Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.
Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.
Document exact error messages before the next troubleshooting attempt.
