When Office stops working as expected, start with the shortest official checks before you reinstall anything.
Problem Description: Avoid Constant Login Request
Hello I do not use office very often but (almost) every time I use it, I have to overcome several hurdles! Microsoft support is not available! Every attempt to get in contact leads to an non-existing page! I have Office installed on my Mac and do have a 365 Family package. Two things bother me! The constant search for updates and the constant requirement to log in just to open an existing excel file! I avoid updates because when I install them, it takes several minutes before I can open a office application! The update seems to be installed only when you use the app instead of at the time, when the update is downloaded! When I do use an app, like just now, I want to use Excel, I am required to prove, that I have a valid subscription by signing in! Why isn’t this stored somewhere? Every stupid application either remembers me (if I choose this option) or at least allows me to take my login credentials from the place I stored it (Apple Passkey or Google). Here, when opening Excel and attempting to sign in, the first option is to sell me a new subscription. So I have to state that I already have one and then I have to type in my user name because the pop up is not recognized as log-in attempt! Can someone explain and is this a common thing or is it just me? Thank you --- Moved from: Microsoft 365 and Office | Access | For home | Other
Quick Answer for Sign-in Quick Fix
This issue on macOS stems from Office licensing re-validation and macOS Keychain issues.
Likely Causes Behind Office Failure Patterns
The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.
Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger sign-in & login problems.
A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.
Recommended Solution: Installing Office on a New PC
When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.
Microsoft 365 periodically checks license validity, and if the local token is missing or corrupted, Office forces sign-in.
Keychain may block or lose credentials due to denied access, changed privacy permissions, backups, or multiple accounts.
Ensure Keychain access is allowed and credentials are stored correctly to avoid repeated login prompts.
Alternative Solutions for Fallback Options for Sign-in
Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.
Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.
Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.
Working with WPS Office: Editing Files in WPS During Sign-in

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.
Download and install WPS Office from the official website.
Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.
Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.
Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.
If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.
Prevention Tips for Smooth Office Device Transfers
Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.
Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.
Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.
Register more than one MFA method and keep recovery contacts current.
FAQs About Sign-in Help Topics
Can WPS Office fix this sign-in & login problems issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.
Should I reinstall Office before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.
What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
