Question details
The user receives an error stating another object has the same proxyAddresses value when attempting to assign a Microsoft 365 license.

- Product
- Microsoft 365
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Assigning a Microsoft 365 license to a user account, often for a returning former employee.
- Observed behavior
- The system blocks the license assignment, reporting a conflict with an existing proxyAddresses value that is already assigned to another object.
Ensure you have global administrator or Exchange administrator privileges in the Microsoft 365 admin center before attempting to modify user aliases and directory properties.
Locate and Remove the Conflicting Address in Microsoft 365 Admin Center
Use the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to check active users, groups, and deleted accounts for the conflicting email address.
The proxyAddresses attribute must be completely unique across your tenant. The most common cause for this error is that the email address you are trying to use is still tied to a deleted user, a shared mailbox, or another account's alias.
Go to admin.microsoft.com and log in with your global administrator credentials.
Navigate to Users > Active users. Search for the conflicting email address. If found, select the user, go to 'Manage username and email', and delete the conflicting alias.
Go to Users > Deleted users. If the address belongs to a recently deleted account, you must either permanently delete that account from Microsoft Entra ID or restore it and change its aliases.
Expand Teams & groups in the left navigation menu. Check Active teams and groups as well as Shared mailboxes. Remove the email address if it is tied to any of these objects.
Wait up to 15 minutes for the changes to sync across the directory, then return to the user's profile and try assigning the Microsoft 365 license again.

Find the Duplicate Object using Exchange Online PowerShell
If the Admin Center search does not reveal the conflict, use PowerShell to query all Exchange Online objects to pinpoint the exact location of the duplicate address.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does proxyAddresses mean in Microsoft 365?
The proxyAddresses attribute is a directory property in Microsoft Entra ID and Exchange Online that stores all the email addresses (aliases) associated with a specific user, group, or resource. Every address stored here must be completely unique across your organization's tenant.
Why does the error often happen with former employees?
When an employee leaves, their mailbox is frequently converted into a shared mailbox or retained as a deleted user for compliance. If you attempt to recreate an account for them or assign their old email alias to a new user without first clearing the old attributes, the duplicate proxyAddresses error occurs.
How long does it take for proxy address changes to sync?
After you successfully remove a conflicting email address in the Microsoft 365 admin center or Entra ID, it typically takes 5 to 15 minutes for the directory changes to sync across Exchange Online. In rare cases, full synchronization can take up to 24 hours.
