Problem Description: Onenote Keeps Changing Logged

There's two connected problems. Some 4 years ago I changed my email address and got in contact with Microsoft to get it changed on my account. It's changed. I log in on my new account. Now I have two problems. 1. A 10 year-old work account is *still* attached to the account. This should have been left behind when I changed email addresses. On advice from MS, I got in contact with the company and asked them if they could remove it. That worked... for a few months and now it's back. The company is not the problem MS is. 1. OneNote for iPad (on one of my iPads) keeps reverting to the old email address for the login. This is an iPad I've had for less than a year (i.e. an iPad I bought 3 years after changing my email address). When it reverts to the old email address the pencil function screws up completely. It only does this in OneNote and PowerPoint - Word, Excel and OneDrive are all fine. That said, I do use OneNote most on that iPad. My other devices are all fine. So, short of deleting my account when it next comes up for renewal and opening a new account, how on earth can I solve these problems?

Quick Answer for Sign-in Quick Fix

To fix OneNote reverting to an old email address on iPad, perform a clean sign-out and reset: Open OneNote > Settings > Account > Sign Out.

Likely Causes Behind Office Failure Patterns

  • The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.

  • Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger sign-in & login problems.

  • A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.

Recommended Solution: Repairing Office Startup Issues

When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.

  1. Go to iPad Settings > OneNote, tap Reset OneNote, and enable Delete Login Credentials and Delete All Notebooks (cloud notebooks remain on OneDrive).

  2. Force close OneNote, reboot the iPad, then sign in with the new email address.

  3. This clears the cached identity causing the issue.

Alternative Solutions for Fallback Options for Sign-in

  1. Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.

  2. Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.

  3. Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.

Working with WPS Office: Editing Files in WPS During Sign-in

WPS Office all-in-one workspace for documents spreadsheets presentations and PDFs
WPS Office — free all-in-one office suite for everyday document work.

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.

  1. Download and install WPS Office from the official website.

  2. Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.

  3. Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.

  4. Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.

If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.

Prevention Tips for Smooth Office Device Transfers

  • Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.

  • Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.

  • Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.

  • Register more than one MFA method and keep recovery contacts current.

FAQs About Sign-in Help Topics

Can WPS Office fix this sign-in & login problems issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.

Should I reinstall Office before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.

What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
