This guide walks you through account locked & blocked using Microsoft-supported steps first, with WPS only where it genuinely helps.

Problem Description: Lost Account Admin Access

I'm trying to get back into a Microsoft Tenant with a friend. It was setup for her several years ago by someone else and recently her password is not working. When trying to recover the account, the verification code comes to the Cell number, but the recovery email that someone put into her account is her ******@userdomain.com email account that she is trying to recover. Yes I have told her we need to change that but we need to get back into the account to do this. There is no partner of record or contact to help with it. She's been being billed monthly on a CC for the Business Services she's using, email/office etc. She's the only admin account in the Tenant as well. She's reached out to MS and has given ownership details of the MS Domain/Tenant and never hears back from the secretive Data Protection Team for password reset. I've helped her to redirect the incoming email for now, have changed the MX record to go through a forwarding service to her gmail account and that's working great. We have actually tried the password recovery and have the email on file the ******@userdomain.com account that is forwarded but it does not receive the code from MS. But in the past day we have received the monthly invoice from Microsoft with the charges for the services. Can anyone at Microsoft Help with this, as it's a big pain and frustration right now.

Quick Answer for Office Setup on New Device

To regain access to a Microsoft Tenant, first ensure you're signing in with the correct email account used to set up the tenant; try any previously used accounts.

Likely Causes Behind Account Locked Root Factors

  • The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.

  • Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger account locked & blocked.

  • A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.

Recommended Solution: Transferring Office License Safely

When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.

  1. If recovery prompts fail, submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 support page, selecting 'I can't sign in or access my tenant,' and be ready to verify identity and ownership via business documentation, domain ownership, or nonprofit registration.

  2. As the only global admin, contact the Azure Data Protection team directly at +1 866-807-5850 for password reset assistance, or try Microsoft 365 support.

  3. Check security settings for any additional recovery options.

Alternative Solutions for Secondary Login Fixes

  1. Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.

  2. Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.

  3. Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.

Working with WPS Office: WPS as a Local Alternative

WPS Office AI Copilot and smart features
WPS Office AI — write, summarize, and automate tasks with built-in Copilot.

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.

  1. Download and install WPS Office from the official website.

  2. Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.

  3. Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.

  4. Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.

If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.

Prevention Tips for Keeping Office Stable Long Term

  • Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.

  • Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.

  • Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.

  • Register more than one MFA method and keep recovery contacts current.

FAQs About Office Support Questions

Can WPS Office fix this account locked & blocked issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.

Should I reinstall Office before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.

What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
