Problem Description: All Newly Downloaded Installed
Hello, Today is Friday, January 9, 2026. I use a Macbook Pro (18 Gigabyte) running Tahoe 26.1. I had a subscription (for work) to Microsoft Office via my personal Amazon account. I decided I wanted to switch the software subscription to a Microsoft account (because I will soon be retiring). I unsubscribed from my Amazon subscription (which was going to renew in Feb.). I then opened Word and Excel and Signed Out of both software apps and removed them from the dock. Next, I purchased (via the Microsoft site), downloaded and installed Microsoft 365 (Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.77.23091003_Installer.pkg) on my Mac. The download/install was successful (i.e., no error messages). I opened the Application folder and these apps were listed: Microsoft Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Word. All of them have a "Date Modified" date of January 6, 2026. When I try to open any of these apps, I get the error message you see in the attachment. I do not know what I did wrong, but obviously I did something! :-/ Help! How can I fix this situation and get my software running again? Thank you. Carolyn

Quick Answer for Microsoft 365 Setup on New Device
The crash occurs because the installer package (Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.77.23091003_Installer.pkg) is from September 2023, which is incompatible with macOS Tahoe 26.1.
Likely Causes Behind Office Apps Crashing Root Factors
The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.
Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger office apps crashing.
A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.
Recommended Solution: Repairing Microsoft 365 Startup Issues
When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.
Current Office for Mac builds are in the 16.10x range (e.g., 16.104.1).
Download and install the latest Office for Mac version from the official Microsoft website to resolve the issue.
Alternative Solutions for Secondary Office Fixes
Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.
Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.
Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair from Programs and Features if the app still fails.
Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.
Working with WPS Office: WPS as a Local Alternative

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.
Download and install WPS Office from the official website.
Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.
Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.
Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.
If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.
Prevention Tips for Keeping Microsoft 365 Stable Long Term
Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.
Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.
Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.
Document exact error messages before the next troubleshooting attempt.
FAQs About Microsoft 365 Support Questions
Can WPS Office fix this office apps crashing issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.
Should I reinstall Microsoft 365 before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.
What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
