Fix Microsoft Project Bar Styles Not Applying to Gantt Charts
Question details
Users are unable to apply custom bar styles or change colors for specific Gantt chart task bars, and are experiencing duplicate or overlapping text.

- Product
- Microsoft Project
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Formatting specific task bars in a master schedule or project plan to reflect different project phases using distinct colors.
- Observed behavior
- The selected colors in the Bar Styles menu do not apply to the actual Gantt bars on the chart, and sometimes task names fail to display or show duplicate text.
Ensure you are modifying the correct master schedule or subproject, as custom formatting from original project plans does not automatically carry over into master plans.
Clear Direct Formatting from Gantt Bars
Direct formatting overrides general bar styles. Resetting direct formatting allows your custom bar styles to apply correctly.
When an individual task bar is formatted directly by double-clicking it, it creates an override. This prevents any changes made in the general Bar Styles window from applying to that specific bar.
Click the small box in the upper-left corner of the Gantt Chart view (directly above the first column, normally the ID field) to select the entire view.
On the ribbon, go to the Gantt Chart Format tab, click on Bar Styles, then select Format, and choose Bar.
When the Format Bar window appears, click the Reset button. This will clear all direct bar formatting and force the bars to inherit their colors from the main Bar Styles window.

Adjust Bar Style Precedence Order
Microsoft Project applies bar styles based on their order in the Bar Styles list, with lower items taking priority.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't the master project inherit formatting from the subprojects?
Microsoft Project master plans do not automatically inherit all custom formatting (like specific bar colors) from inserted subprojects. You must adjust or reapply the specific bar styles directly within the master schedule's Bar Styles window.
What causes overlapping text on my Gantt chart bars?
Overlapping text usually occurs when a task meets the criteria of multiple overlapping bar styles, and both styles have text configured to display (such as resource names or dates) in the exact same position.
How do I change the color of a single Gantt bar without affecting others?
To apply direct formatting to just one bar, double-click the specific Gantt bar you want to change on the chart. In the Format Bar window, adjust the shape and color under the Bar Shape tab. Be aware that this creates a formatting override for that specific task.
