Additionally, you can count the cells that don't just contain text. Use the COUNTIF function modified as follows to do this. Remove the * (asterisk) symbol from before and after your character or word, as shown below, to have the function count the cells that contain only your selected character or word.=COUNTIF(D2:D6,a)
Since there are no cells in our example that solely contain the character a, the count result is 0.
