Why Outlook Attachment Preview Settings Are Missing

Instructions beginning with File > Options > Trust Center apply to classic Outlook for Windows. Those controls do not exist in new Outlook or Outlook on the web, so first identify the Outlook version you actually use.

Which Outlook Versions Include Trust Center

Classic Outlook is the installed Win32 desktop application and includes File, Options, and Trust Center. New Outlook uses a web-based interface, while Outlook on the web runs in a browser. If there is no File tab, the classic instructions do not apply.

Enable Attachment Preview in Classic Outlook

1. Open classic Outlook for Windows.
2. Select File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
3. Open Attachment Handling and make sure Turn off Attachment Preview is not selected.
4. Choose Attachment and Document Previewers and enable the installed handler for the file type.
5. Restart Outlook and test a trusted attachment.

Open a Trusted Attachment Outside Outlook

In new Outlook or the web version, use Download, Save to OneDrive, or Open in browser. Save only expected attachments, scan suspicious files, and open them with the correct desktop application. If organization policy blocks the action, the Microsoft 365 administrator must review that policy.

Test the Preview Handler, Not Just Outlook

If only PDFs fail, repair or reinstall the PDF handler rather than weakening all Outlook security. Test another trusted file of the same type and a different file type to isolate the previewer.
