Problem Description: Long Wait Tow Factor
I am owner of a family 365 accnt. My wife forgot her password to login to her onedrive. Too many attempts to login were made and she was locked out from trying. It is now 48 hours later and when she attempts to change the password the two factor authentication will only send a code to her email but when she inputs the last four digits of her cell for the second authentication step she receives an error saying that method is not available right now. I am assuming there is a timed lockout but the error message does not indicate that whatsoever. So...she has two factor authentication turned on, one factor sends the code, second factor will not...can we "force" the code to send somehow or how long does one need to wait for the system to begin sending both forms again? Thanks for any help whatsoever!
Quick Answer for Office Setup on New Device
The most common reason for two-factor authentication issues is that Microsoft detected suspicious activity, but there can be other causes.
Likely Causes Behind MFA Root Factors
The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.
Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger mfa & verification issues.
A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.
Recommended Solution: Restoring Office After Errors
When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.
You won't be able to view or change the account's security/contact details until you successfully sign in.
If you don't have access to the verification methods already registered, select 'Use another verification method' and try any other option listed.
If you don't see any other options, select 'I don't have these' to redirect to the recovery/backup code request.
If you don't have the recovery/backup code, continue with that option; most accounts will then move into a security waiting period where you may be offered the ability to add a new verification method after about 30 days.
Alternative Solutions for Secondary Login Fixes
Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.
Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.
Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.
Working with WPS Office: WPS as a Local Alternative

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.
Download and install WPS Office from the official website.
Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.
Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.
Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.
If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.
Prevention Tips for Keeping Office Stable Long Term
Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.
Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.
Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.
Register more than one MFA method and keep recovery contacts current.
FAQs About Office Support Questions
Can WPS Office fix this mfa & verification issues issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.
Should I reinstall Office before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.
What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
