Question details

The user wants to configure Microsoft PowerPoint so that every slide in new presentations automatically transitions after a 30-second delay by default.

How to Set a 30-Second Default Slide Transition in PowerPoint
Product
Microsoft PowerPoint
Device & OS
Windows
Scenario
Setting up a standard, timed slide duration for new presentations, often used for kiosks, informational displays, or timed pitches.
Observed behavior
Slide transitions currently need to be set manually per slide or per presentation; there is no built-in global application setting to configure default transition times for the software.
Before you start

Decide whether you want to apply this 30-second default transition to an existing corporate template or start from a completely blank presentation to create your new standard look.

Solution 1Recommended

Create and Apply a Default Theme with a 30-Second Transition

Use the Slide Master to create a custom default theme so that all newly created presentations automatically inherit the 30-second slide transition.

PowerPoint transition timing is stored as a per-slide setting, not a per-installation setting. You cannot change a global software setting for this, but you can bypass this limitation by embedding the transition time into your default document theme.

Keep in mind that this solution only applies to newly created presentations. Existing files must be updated individually or processed with a VBA macro in batch mode.

1
Open the Slide Master

With a blank presentation or your corporate template open in PowerPoint, go to the ribbon and choose View > Slide Master.

2
Select the main Slide Master

In the left-hand pane containing the slide thumbnails, scroll to the very top and click the largest thumbnail. This is the main slide master that dictates the settings for all dependent layouts.

3
Set the transition timing

Navigate to the Transitions tab on the ribbon. In the Timing group, check the box for Advance Slide > After, and set the time value to 00:30.

4
Save as a custom theme

Go back to the Slide Master tab and click Close Master View. Go to File > Save As, and save the document with the exact name 'Default Theme', making sure to keep its existing file extension.

5
Move to the Document Themes folder

Open Windows File Explorer and paste the following path into the address bar: %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes. Press Enter, and copy your newly saved 'Default Theme' file into this folder.

Setup Complete: Any new presentation created by this user will now use the formatting defined in the Default Theme file, meaning all slides will automatically auto-advance after 30 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply a 30-second default transition to existing PowerPoint presentations?

No, existing files will not automatically inherit this setting because transition times are saved on a per-slide basis. You must open each existing file, select all slides, and manually apply the 30-second transition, or use a VBA macro to process multiple files in batch.

Will other users see the 30-second transition if I share the file?

Yes. Because the transition time is saved within the presentation file itself rather than your local installation settings, anyone viewing the presentation on their computer will experience the 30-second auto-advance.

How do I remove the 30-second default transition later?

Navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes using File Explorer, open your 'Default Theme' file, go back into the Slide Master, disable the 'After: 00:30' setting under the Transitions tab, and save the file again.
