Microsoft Loop shows collaboration differently from Word Track Changes. Live cursors and profile pictures help identify current or recent participants, while version history shows previous versions and their modifier. Neither view permanently labels every sentence with its author, so important decisions should also be recorded through comments, assigned owners, or a Loop Recap.
What Loop Avatars and Version History Actually Show
When a component is open, colored cursors show active edits and avatars in the upper-right identify people who are viewing, editing, or recently edited it. See who has access answers a different question: it shows who can open the component and may include people who only viewed it.
Identify Current and Previous Loop Editors

- Open the live component. Use the Loop link or open it inside Teams, Outlook, or the Loop app. Confirm that you are signed in with the identity that has access.
- Inspect active collaborators. Watch for colored cursors and hover over the profile pictures in the upper-right corner to see who is viewing, editing, or recently edited the component.
- Review access separately. Select See who has access to inspect viewers and editors. Access does not prove that a person changed a particular line.
- Open version history. On a Loop page, select More options (...) > Version history. Review the displayed date, time, and modifier for each available version.
- Compare carefully. Open or copy a previous version before restoring it. Loop may group coauthoring activity, and version history may not highlight every exact text change.
Document Important Changes More Clearly
For changes that need an explanation, highlight the relevant content and add a comment or @mention. On a Loop page, use More options (...) > Recap, create a recap, summarize the change, and mention affected teammates. Add explicit owner columns to tables or task lists when accountability matters.
Use WPS Office for Formal Review Workflows
WPS Office cannot add sentence-level authorship to a Microsoft Loop component or change Loop’s version history. It is a free Microsoft Office-compatible alternative for formal local review workflows using DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF files.

WPS Writer and Spreadsheets can support comments, document revisions, and structured review copies in a familiar interface. Verify cloud collaboration, organization policies, macros, add-ins, and protected content before moving a controlled workflow away from Microsoft 365.
Microsoft Loop Editing History FAQs
Do Loop avatars show everyone who changed a specific sentence?
No. Avatars identify people who are viewing, editing, or recently edited the component, but they do not attach a permanent author badge to every sentence. Hover over an avatar for identity details.
Can Microsoft Loop version history show exactly what each person changed?
Version history can show versions, dates, and the listed modifier and can restore or copy earlier content. It does not provide Word-style Track Changes for every insertion and deletion, and coauthoring changes may be grouped into one version.
Where is a Loop component stored when it is created in Teams or Outlook?
Loop components created in Teams and Outlook are stored as .loop files in the creator’s OneDrive. Open the linked filename to reach the stored file and its available history or access controls.
How can a team make Loop changes easier to audit?
Use comments and @mentions for decisions, add names or owners to task rows, and post a Recap after meaningful updates. For regulated audit requirements, ask the administrator whether Microsoft Purview audit capabilities are required.
