How are Numbers Converted To Text In Excel
A free Office suite fully compatible with Microsoft Office
If you keep long and short numbers in Excel spreadsheets, you might need to translate them to text at some point. Changing stored digits as numbers to text may be done for a variety of reasons. Find out below why you might need to tell Excel to treat the entered numbers as text rather than numbers.
Some of the typical visual clue used in Excel to distinguish between numbers and text include the following:
1.The numerical values are automatically aligned to the right side of the cell. The text values, however, are positioned to the right of the cell.
2.In Excel, the status bar just at bottom shows the Average, Count, and Sum for each value when we select several numeric cells. The Excel status bar only shows the Count for cells with text formatting.
3.For numeric cells, arithmetic operations function as anticipated. Even though the values in the text-formatted cells appear to be integers, they sometimes yield errors.
4.The formula bar shows the same value as the cell when we choose the cell(s) with a number format. The formula bar often shows a leading apostrophe for cells with text formatting.
No error signal appears when we choose the cell with numeric values. However, if we choose the text-formatted cell, the error indicator is shown. An exclamation point, a message will display, and a few fast alternatives are all included in the error indicator's drop-down menu. The text-formatted cells also have a little green triangle visible in the top-left corner.
After choosing the numerical cells, the Number Format drop-down box under the Home tab on the ribbon shows Number or General format. Cells with text formatting show up as Text in the format box.
Using Format Cells to convert Numbers to Text:
From the Format Cells dialogue box, it is also possible to convert the numbers into text. It is the approach for translating numbers to text that is most dependable and constant. The associated cells' cell formats are often changed to text only, similar to the preceding approach.
The procedures listed below must be followed in order to use the Format Cells dialogue box in the Excel spreadsheet to change numbers into text:
In order to use numbers in text format, we must first select all of the relevant cells.

We must choose the Number tab and choose the Text option in the Category section of the Format Cells dialogue box. Then, we need to press the OK button.
All of the specified cells' formats will be changed to text-based cells as a result. These cells will treat any numbers that are present as text.
Large Numeric Values Entry to convert number to text:
Excel automatically converts huge numbers and numeric values to their exponential forms when we enter them. Possible display issues with the values. Therefore, we must convert the associated Excel number fields to text only if we wish to show huge numbers like account numbers, employee IDs, order IDs, or any other large number.
Avoiding Dates from Numbers to convert number to text:
When entering particular numbers (such as scores) into Excel, one frequent situation where we might need to convert numbers to text is that. As an illustration, 21-04, 20-10, 01-08, etc. By default, Excel interprets all such integers as dates and automatically formats them into acceptable date forms. Therefore, we may convert the numbers into text when we need to input scores or other pertinent information in Excel.
