This tutorial elaborates how to insert page numbers in word document. Page numbers identify order or even total page numbers. You can insert page number in word very easily. Set alignment and location of page numbers. Word document allow multiple location to position page numbers like at the top or bottom of the page. There are a variety of styles to choose from (top-right corner, bottom-center, et cetera). 

In this article we will show simple steps to insert page numbers in word

How to insert page number in word document in Windows or Mac

1.Open a word document or open a existing document to add page number.

2.Go to the “insert” tab. Open “page number”  option.

3.Drop box will appear having several options. Click “Header Left” option.

4.Page number will be added at header left side of page. As shown in picture.

5.Now click “Header Middle” option.

6.Page number will be added at middle of header.

7.Now click “Header Right” option.

8.Page number will be added at right side of header.

9.Now click “Header inside” option.

10.In this option location of page number will be left most side of header of page.

11.Now click “Header Outside” option.

12.Location of page number on a page will be right most side of header.

13.Now click “Footer left” option.

14.In this option page number will be added at left side of footer.

15.Now click “Footer Middle” option.

16.Page number will be at middle of footer.

17.Click “Footer right” option.

18.Location of page number will be right most side of footer.

19.Now click “Footer inside” option.

20.In this option page number will also add at left most side of footer.

21.Now click “Footer Outside” option.

22.Location of page number will be at right most side of footer.

How to add customize page number in word

1.Go to the “insert” tab. Open “page number”  option.

2.Many options will appear. Click “Insert page number”.

3.Dialogue box will appear having multiple fields. With these options we can location, alignment and sequence of page numbers in word document.

Click “Format” field. Multiple options will appear, you can select format of page number.

4.Now click “Position” field. Drop down menu will appear with many options. You can select location of page number from these options.

5.If you checked “continuous from previous section” then page numbers will start from where page numbers of previous section ended. Sometimes we divide our whole document in multiple sections mostly in writing thesis or book. This option is used in this scenario.

6.In “Start at” option you can write number, from where you want your page number start.

7.In “Apply to” field we have three options. If you checked “entire document” then page numbers will add on entire document.

8.If you checked “from current page”, then page number will add from current page you are at.

9.If you checked “current section”, then page number will add from current section you are at.

10.Click “ok”.
