Cell referencing is most basic function use in excel, everyone must know about this function as this is very useful. It applies to nearly all the functions and complicated formulas. In order to understand how to use cell reference in excel,first you must know what is cell reference.

Cell reference tells us the location of cell on a given spreadsheet. Each cell in the spreadsheet has its unique name so it can be easily identified. Using cell referencing can make assigning functions to cell easier. If you are wondering how to use cell reference in excel, this is the article for you.

Use cell reference in excel to duplicate and add data

1. Open the file in which you need to make duplicate of a cell. The given example is of sales by A person and B person.

2. Click on H7 to reference sales of person A.

3. Type “=” sign and click on cell C8 and press Tab. The value of sales in March by A salesperson is duplicated here.

4. For referencing sales in March by person B, click on H8.

5. Type “=” sign and click on cell D8 and press Tab. The value of sales in March by B salesperson is duplicated here.

6. Now to find total sales of person A & B, click on the cell H9

7. Now type “=” sign and click on cell H7

8. Type “+” sign and click on cell H8

9. Press Tab. The total sales of person A & B in March is calculated.

Use cell reference in excel to duplicate and multiply data

1. Open the file in which you need to make duplicate of a cell. The given example is of prime costs and profit margin of 4 companies. We need to calculate the total cost of company 2.

2. Click on cell H7.

3. Type “=” sign and select cell C7

4. Press Tab. The Prime cost of company 2 is duplicated in cell H7.

5. Now click on cell H8.

6. Type “=” sign and press D7.

7. Press Tab. The profit margin of company 2 is duplicated in cell H8.

8. For calculating the total cost. Click on cell H9.

9. Type “=” sign and click H7

10. Now type “*” sign and click cell H8.

11. Press Tab. The total cost is calculated.
