Professional Summary

Work Experience

10 Resume Mistakes That Cost You Interviews

As a career coach who has reviewed over 10,000 resumes, these are the most common mistakes I see — and how to fix them immediately.

1. Using a Generic "One-Size-Fits-All" Resume

Each job application needs a tailored resume. Customize your summary, skills, and bullet points to match the specific job description. Generic resumes get filtered out by ATS systems.

2. Listing Duties Instead of Achievements

"Managed a team" tells the recruiter nothing. "Led a cross-functional team of 12 to deliver a $3M product launch 2 weeks ahead of schedule" tells them everything.

3. Including Irrelevant Information

Leave out hobbies (unless directly relevant), outdated skills, or positions from 15+ years ago. Every line on your resume should earn its place.

4. Poor Formatting and Inconsistency

Mixed fonts, inconsistent date formats, uneven spacing — these signal carelessness. Use a professional template to ensure visual consistency throughout.

5. Writing an Objective Statement Instead of a Summary

"Seeking a challenging position..." is outdated. Replace it with a professional summary that highlights what you bring to the employer, not what you want from them.

6. Typos and Grammatical Errors

58% of recruiters will reject a resume with typos. Proofread multiple times, read it aloud, and have someone else review it. Every word matters.

7. Making It Too Long (or Too Short)

coolguy2003@email.com won't get you taken seriously. Use firstname.lastname@gmail.com or a professional domain. This is a simple fix with massive impact.

9. Missing Keywords from the Job Description

ATS software scans for exact keyword matches. If the posting mentions "agile methodology," your resume should include that exact phrase — not just "flexible workflow."

10. Not Including a LinkedIn Profile URL
