What Is an ET File?

Quick answer: An ET file is a WPS Spreadsheets workbook (the .et format). Microsoft Excel cannot open it. Use WPS to open, edit, and Save As .xlsx on your PC—renaming the suffix does not convert the file.

  • Native .et on Windows, Mac, and phone
  • Offline convert to XLSX / XLS—no upload
  • Free open, edit, and everyday Save As

Core features

Key features of WPS Spreadsheets for ET files

Open .et workbooks without Excel, keep spreadsheet structure intact, and move to Excel or PDF inside the same suite.

High-compatibility ET opener for real spreadsheets

Generic viewers and random converter sites often break the sheet before you even start working.

  • Open native .et workbooks with formulas, charts, and conditional formats intact.
  • Edit cells and sheet structure instead of only previewing a flat copy.
  • Use the same spreadsheet workspace for .et, XLSX, XLS, and CSV.

Offline ET to Excel conversion for safer sharing

Rename tricks do not convert the file, and upload-based tools are a bad fit for quotes or internal spreadsheets.

  • Save As a real .xlsx or .xls copy on your PC.
  • Keep more formulas, layout, and charts than a generic web converter.
  • Move to PDF or other office formats without leaving WPS Office.

One spreadsheet suite across desktop and phone

ET files often show up in mixed workflows: Windows desktops, Mac laptops, or a phone attachment that needs a quick check.

  • Open the same .et file on Windows, Mac, and mobile with one workflow.
  • Review and edit workbook data before exporting a clean Excel copy.
  • Stay in the WPS suite when the job expands from spreadsheet to document or PDF.

Why cannot Excel open an ET file?

Microsoft Excel has no built-in ET decoder. If you File → Open a .et workbook, Excel typically errors, shows garbage, or treats the file as corrupt. Formulas and WPS-only functions do not “translate themselves” inside Excel.

That is the Microsoft-ecosystem gap: great for XLSX, silent on ET. Searching “open et file in excel” does not unlock a hidden Excel button. The reliable path is open in WPS, then export a real Excel file.

If Excel already “opened” something after you renamed the suffix, treat that sheet as untrusted until you reopen the original .et in WPS Spreadsheets. Garbled headers and #REF! rows are common after a fake extension change.

  • Useful when the workbook has formulas, charts, or formatting to keep

Can I just rename .et to .xlsx to open it?

This is the most common beginner trap. Changing quote.et to quote.xlsx only changes the label. The bytes inside are still a WPS workbook. Excel then reports a corrupt file—the search phrase “et file corrupted when open in excel” is often this rename, not a damaged disk.

Real conversion is Save As (or export) from an app that can read ET. Keep a copy of the original .et until the new XLSX opens cleanly in Excel.
