Solution 1Recommended

Assign eDiscovery Manager and Administrator Roles

Grant the necessary roles in the Microsoft 365 compliance center to allow users to view eDiscovery search results.

To view search content from an eDiscovery alert, the user must explicitly be assigned eDiscovery permissions. Even Global Administrators do not have these permissions by default and must assign the roles to themselves.

1
Access the Compliance Portal

Navigate to compliance.microsoft.com and sign in with your administrator credentials.

2
Navigate to Permissions

In the left-hand navigation pane, select 'Roles & scopes' and then click on 'Permissions'.

3
Select eDiscovery Manager

Under the Microsoft Purview solutions section, locate and select 'eDiscovery Manager'.

4
Add Users to the Role

Click 'Edit' next to the eDiscovery Manager or eDiscovery Administrator role. Search for the users who need access, add them to the list, and click 'Save'.

Assign eDiscovery Manager and Administrator Roles
Permission Sync Delay: After assigning eDiscovery permissions, it may take up to 24 hours for the changes to fully sync and grant access to the search content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an eDiscovery Administrator delete a search result?

Yes, a user assigned the eDiscovery Administrator permission has the authority to edit or delete searches and search results within the compliance center.

Why can't global admins view eDiscovery search content by default?

By design, Global Administrators are not automatically granted eDiscovery permissions to maintain strict data privacy across the organization. They must manually assign the eDiscovery Manager or Administrator roles to their own accounts before accessing search content.

Is it possible to recover missing search details if audit logging was turned off?

No. If unified audit logging was disabled when the searches were performed, the system did not record the user and administrator activities. Therefore, it is not possible to retrieve those historical details.

Who has the authority to assign eDiscovery roles?

Users who are members of the Organization Management role group, or those who have been granted the Role Management role, possess the necessary administrative rights to assign eDiscovery permissions to themselves or other users.
