Fix Delete and Backspace Keys Not Working in Excel
Question details
The user is unable to use the Delete or Backspace keys to clear a cell, making the keyboard appear unresponsive.

- Product
- Microsoft Excel
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Attempting to delete text from a seemingly filled cell that is actually empty, due to text overflowing from an adjacent column.
- Observed behavior
- Pressing the Delete or Backspace key on a selected cell does nothing because the text actually originates from the adjacent column overflowing into the blank space.
Before proceeding, click on the seemingly unresponsive cell and look at the Formula Bar at the top of the screen. If the Formula Bar is completely empty, the text you see is actually spilling over from an adjacent cell.
Adjust Column Width to Resolve Visual Overlap
Widen the column containing the overflowing text to reveal which cell actually holds the data, ensuring you are deleting the correct cell content.
When text in one cell is longer than the column width, it visually spills over into the adjacent blank cell. Trying to delete the text from that adjacent cell will not work because the cell is technically empty.
Click on the cell containing the beginning of the text string and check the Formula Bar at the top to confirm it holds the actual data.
Hover your mouse over the boundary line between the column headers (for example, between column A and B) until the cursor changes to a double-sided arrow, then double-click to auto-fit the column.
Once the text is completely contained within its rightful column, select that cell and press the Delete or Backspace key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does text overflow into blank cells in Excel?
By default, if a cell contains text that is wider than its column width and the adjacent cell is completely blank, the software allows the text to visually overflow. This is just a display behavior and does not mean the text is actually stored in the adjacent cell.
How can I prevent text from overflowing into adjacent cells?
You can prevent this visual overflow by enabling text wrapping. Select the cell, right-click to choose Format Cells, and under the Alignment tab, check the 'Wrap text' option. This forces the row height to expand instead.
What is the difference between the Delete and Backspace keys in Excel?
The Delete key clears the content of the selected cell while keeping the cell selected. The Backspace key clears the content and immediately places the cursor inside the cell, switching to editing mode.
Does Excel Safe Mode delete my keyboard shortcuts?
No. Excel Safe Mode simply launches the application with custom toolbar settings and third-party add-ins temporarily disabled. It is a diagnostic tool to help identify if an external plugin is blocking your keyboard inputs.
