Fix OneDrive Showing Old Organization Name in Windows
Question details
OneDrive for Windows does not reflect the newly updated organization name from the Microsoft 365 admin center.

- Product
- OneDrive for Windows
- Device & OS
- Windows
- Scenario
- The user has updated their organization name in the Microsoft 365 admin center, but local synced directories are not updating.
- Observed behavior
- Synchronized folders continue to display the old organization name locally in Windows File Explorer, even though other Microsoft applications show the updated name.
Please note that it can take several days for organizational name changes made in the Microsoft 365 admin center to propagate fully to local OneDrive clients.
Unlink and Reconnect OneDrive to a New Folder Location
Re-syncing your account to a fresh local directory forces OneDrive to fetch the updated organization name from the server.
If several days have passed since the name change and the local folder still shows the old name, you will need to manually unlink your computer and reconnect it to a new location.
Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your Windows taskbar notification area, then click the gear icon and select 'Settings'.
Navigate to the 'Account' tab in the settings window, click 'Unlink this PC', and confirm the action to sign out of your account.
Sign back into OneDrive using your Microsoft 365 credentials. During the setup process, click 'Change location' and choose a different local folder to sync your files. The new folder should now display the updated organization name.

Open a Service Request in Microsoft 365 Admin Center
If unlinking and reconnecting does not resolve the issue, Microsoft Support must manually refresh your tenant's synchronization backend.
Try WPS Office for a Seamless Document Experience
While waiting for your OneDrive organization name to update, you can continue working efficiently with WPS Office. It is a lightweight, fully compatible office suite that easily integrates with local and cloud drives.
- 1. Download and Install: Get the free WPS Office installer from the official website and complete the setup.
- 2. Open Your Files: Launch WPS Office and navigate to 'Open'. Select your OneDrive folder to access your documents immediately.
- 3. Edit and Save: Edit your documents with full format preservation and save them back to the same synced folder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't my OneDrive folder name update immediately after a change?
Changes made in the Microsoft 365 admin center are cached and distributed across multiple servers globally. It usually takes several days for these updates to propagate and force a rename on local Windows desktop clients.
Can I manually rename the OneDrive folder in Windows File Explorer?
No, manually renaming the root synchronized OneDrive organization folder in Windows File Explorer is not supported. Doing so will break the synchronization process and cause file conflicts.
Will unlinking my PC delete my existing OneDrive files?
Unlinking your PC only stops the synchronization process. Your files remain safely stored in the cloud, and any previously downloaded files stay on your local hard drive until you manually delete them.
