Solution 1Recommended

Unhide Missing Layouts in Slide Master View

The missing items are likely custom slide layouts that have been hidden. Unhiding them in the Slide Master view will restore them to your normal Layout gallery.

PowerPoint separates complete slides from slide layouts. When a layout is hidden in the Slide Master, it will not appear in the standard Home tab gallery, preventing you from using it to insert new slides.

1
Open the Slide Master View

Click on the 'View' tab located in the top ribbon, then select 'Slide Master' from the Master Views group.

2
Locate the Hidden Layout

In the left-hand navigation pane, scroll through the slide thumbnails. Look for layouts that have a crossed-out number or appear dimmed, which indicates they are currently hidden.

3
Unhide the Slide Layout

Right-click on the hidden layout thumbnail and click on 'Hide Slide' in the context menu to toggle the setting off. The thumbnail should no longer display the hidden icon.

4
Apply the Restored Layout

Click 'Close Master View' on the ribbon. Back in normal view, go to the 'Home' tab, click the 'Layout' dropdown, and select your newly unhidden layout to apply it to a slide.

Quick Tip: If you just want to insert a new slide with that layout instead of changing an existing one, click the bottom half of the 'New Slide' button on the Home tab after unhiding it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some custom layouts randomly disappear from my presentation?

If a custom layout is not actively used by any slides in your presentation, PowerPoint may sometimes remove or hide it when saving or applying new themes. To prevent this, you can right-click the master slide in Slide Master view and select 'Preserve Master'.

What is the difference between a slide and a slide layout?

A slide is the actual page you present and add content to, while a slide layout acts as a blueprint (found in the Slide Master) that dictates where titles, text boxes, and images sit on that slide.

Can I recover a layout if it was deleted from the Slide Master?

If you accidentally deleted a layout in the Slide Master and saved the file, you cannot recover it automatically. You will need to open a previous version of the template or manually recreate the layout.
