Fix Slow OneDrive File Downloads and Uploads

Right-click the compressed file you are trying to upload or download and check its properties to see the exact size, as large files with many images naturally take longer to transfer.

Attempt to upload or download a significantly smaller file (like a basic text document). If the small file transfers instantly, the issue is likely just the size of the original file rather than a service outage.

Ensure no other devices on your network are heavily consuming bandwidth by streaming high-definition video or downloading large games while you are syncing files.

Navigate to your OneDrive folder using Windows File Explorer or open the OneDrive app on your Android device.

Look at the icons next to your files. A blue cloud icon indicates the file is online-only and must be downloaded over the internet before opening, which takes time.

Files with a green checkmark are already synchronized locally on your device. These files do not need to be downloaded again and should open instantly in applications like Word.

Log into the OneDrive web interface in your browser and download the large file manually. This helps measure the raw download speed outside of the desktop sync client.

If you are opening a recently synced file directly in a word processor, note that rendering a large file with numerous high-resolution images takes processing power and time, which is independent of the network download speed.
