This guide walks you through document & file issues using Microsoft-supported steps first, with WPS only where it genuinely helps.

Problem Description: Why Word 2024 Opening

I'm using Office 2024 on Win11. Word keeps opening .docx files in "Viewing" mode. If I click on the drop-down box in the upper right of thw window, then there is the option to edit them. I have checked: FILE > OPTIONS > TRUST CENTER > FILE BLOCK SETTINGS. It is in "Default." The option: "Open selected file types in protected view" is selected. However, if I change it to "Open selected file types in protected view and allow editing," *nothing changes*. Word still opens in "Viewing." I have checked the internet to see if anyone has had the same issue. One guy said to uncheck all the options in TRUST CTR > PROTECTED VIEW. Yeah, . . . that's not gonna happen. Otherwise, nothing very helpful. Why is this happening? How do I stop/change it? Thanks for any help! ![w1](/api/attachments/ecdaf33f-f5a0-4157-b407-27a2005a9f04?platform=QnA) ![w2](/api/attachments/95a6da21-6d20-4554-a521-1550b049b5e5?platform=QnA)

Quick Answer for Word Setup on New Device

The issue you're experiencing with Word 2024 opening .docx files in Viewing/Read-only mode may be related to the Protected View settings.

Likely Causes Behind Document Root Factors

  • The Microsoft account or license context may not match the purchase or device.

  • Cached credentials, outdated builds, or damaged local components can trigger document & file issues.

  • A file-specific corruption or add-in conflict can mimic a broader application failure.

Recommended Solution: Installing Word on a New PC

When to use this: Apply these steps when the symptoms match and you can access the relevant Microsoft account or administrator.

  1. When the option "Open selected file types in protected view" is enabled, Word opens files from potentially unsafe locations in a restricted mode to protect your computer from potential threats.

  2. Since you mentioned that changing the setting to allow editing did not resolve the issue, it could be that the files you are trying to open are still being recognized as potentially unsafe.

  3. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue: 1. **Check File Location**: Ensure that the files you are opening are stored in a trusted location.

  4. Files from the internet or untrusted sources are more likely to open in Protected View.

  5. 2. **Trust Individual Documents**: If you are confident that the document is safe, you can trust individual documents by clicking "Enable Editing" on the Message Bar when the document opens.

  6. 3. **Review Trust Center Settings**: Go back to the Trust Center settings and ensure that the options under Protected View are configured correctly.

  7. You might consider temporarily unchecking the options to see if it resolves the issue, but be cautious as this may expose your system to risks.

  8. 4. **Check for Group Policy Settings**: If you are in a managed environment, there may be Group Policy settings that enforce Protected View.

Alternative Solutions for Secondary Document Fixes

  1. Retry the Microsoft-side steps after restarting the app and device.

  2. Test the same action in a private browser session or a new blank file to isolate account vs file issues.

  3. Capture exact error text and screenshots before contacting Microsoft Support or your administrator.

Working with WPS Office: WPS as a Local Alternative

WPS Office all-in-one workspace for documents spreadsheets presentations and PDFs
WPS Office — free all-in-one office suite for everyday document work.

WPS Office cannot replace Microsoft account, activation, or cloud fixes for this scenario. It remains one of the best free Microsoft Office-compatible alternatives for opening and editing local files.

  1. Download and install WPS Office from the official website.

  2. Open local Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files in the matching WPS app.

  3. Save a working copy locally while Microsoft-side issues are resolved.

  4. Return to Microsoft Office after the primary fix succeeds.

If you need a practical local workspace in the meantime, try WPS Office.

Prevention Tips for Keeping Word Stable Long Term

  • Keep one primary Microsoft account for subscriptions and Office sign-in.

  • Install updates for Office and Windows before retrying failed workflows.

  • Back up important files before repair, reset, or reinstall actions.

  • Work on copies and keep version history enabled when available.

FAQs About Word Support Questions

Can WPS Office fix this document & file issues issue directly? Only when the WPS steps match the formatting or file task. Account, activation, and cloud issues stay on the Microsoft side.

Should I reinstall Word before trying these steps? Not first. Confirm account, license, and the exact error before reinstalling.

What should I send to Microsoft Support? The affected account email, device type, Office version, exact error text, and screenshots with personal data hidden.
