- Scenario
- Formatting headings and paragraph body text in a document.
- Observed behavior
- Centering the title automatically centers the body text below it, and changing the body text back to left-aligned forces the title to become left-aligned as well.
Enable formatting marks in your document by clicking the 'Show/Hide ¶' button on the Home tab to easily see if your text is separated by manual line breaks or proper paragraph breaks.
Replace the Manual Line Break with a Paragraph Break
This resolves the issue where the title and body text share alignment because they are technically inside the same paragraph.
When you use a soft return (Shift + Enter) instead of a hard return (Enter), Word treats the text before and after the break as a single paragraph. Alignment settings apply to the entire paragraph, which causes the title and body text to change together.
Go to the Home tab and click the 'Show/Hide ¶' icon to make paragraph and line break symbols visible.
Look at the end of your title. If you see a bent arrow symbol (↵), it means a manual line break is tying the title and body text together.
Delete the manual line break symbol, then press the 'Enter' key. A standard paragraph mark (¶) will appear, separating the title and text into two distinct paragraphs.
Click anywhere inside your title and select Center Alignment. Then, click inside your body text and select Left Alignment.

Disable the 'Automatically Update' Style Setting
Use this solution if your text is properly separated by paragraph breaks but modifying one paragraph still alters the alignment of surrounding text.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a manual line break and a paragraph break?
A manual line break (created with Shift+Enter) pushes text to the next line but keeps it within the exact same paragraph, meaning both lines share the same paragraph formatting like alignment. A paragraph break (created with Enter) ends the current paragraph and starts a new one, allowing for independent formatting.
How do I view hidden formatting symbols in my document?
To see hidden formatting marks like spaces, tabs, and paragraph breaks, go to the Home tab and click the 'Show/Hide ¶' button. This makes it much easier to identify layout and formatting issues.
Why do all my headings change when I center just one of them?
This usually happens when the Heading style you are using has the 'Automatically update' option enabled. To fix this, right-click the Heading style in your Styles gallery, click Modify, clear the 'Automatically update' checkbox, and click OK.
