How to Fix Word Headers Linking After Deleting a Section Break
Question details
Users experience an issue where deleting the final section break in a document causes previously independent headers and footers to link together and change their content unexpectedly.

- Scenario
- Removing an unwanted section break at the end or middle of a document without disrupting the header and footer formatting of the preceding pages.
- Observed behavior
- When the section break is deleted, the text before it merges with the section after it, causing the preceding headers and footers to adopt the following section's formatting and become linked.
Turn on 'Show/Hide Editing Marks' (often represented by the ¶ symbol on the Home tab) so you can clearly see the exact locations of all section breaks before you attempt to delete them.
Use a Temporary Section Break to Preserve Formatting
Create a buffer section to copy and hold your header formatting safely before deleting the problematic, unwanted section break.
Word processors store layout properties, including headers and footers, inside the section break mark that appears at the end of that section. When you delete a section break, the text before it instantly adopts the formatting of the section following it. To prevent this longstanding behavior, you need to trick the document by adding a temporary section.
Place your cursor just before the section break you want to delete. Go to the 'Layout' or 'Page Layout' tab, click 'Breaks', and select 'Continuous' under Section Breaks.
Double-click the header area of this newly created temporary section. In the Header & Footer tools tab, click 'Link to Previous' to turn it off. Repeat this for the footer.
Manually copy the correct text and formatting from your original header/footer and paste it into the unlinked header/footer of this temporary section.
Highlight the original, unwanted section break (the one following your temporary section) and press the Delete key. Your formatting will now be securely held by the temporary break you created.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does deleting a section break also change my page margins and orientation?
Section breaks store all page setup properties for the preceding text, including margins, orientation (landscape/portrait), and columns. Deleting the break removes those instructions, causing that section to inherit the page setup of the section that comes directly after it.
How do I easily view hidden section breaks in my document?
You can view hidden section breaks by clicking the 'Show/Hide Paragraph Marks' button (the ¶ symbol) located on the Home tab of your word processor, or by pressing Ctrl + * on your keyboard.
Can I recover my original header if I accidentally deleted the section break?
Yes, if you just deleted the break, immediately press Ctrl + Z (Undo) on your keyboard. This will restore the deleted section break mark, and your original header and footer formatting will return instantly.
