- Scenario
- Formatting a book with alternating odd and even pages, gutter margins, and front matter separated from the main text by a Next Page section break.
- Observed behavior
- Deleting page numbers from the final front-matter pages unexpectedly removes page numbers from either the odd or even pages in the following chapter.
Ensure you have inserted a 'Next Page' section break between the end of your front matter (such as the table of contents) and the beginning of your first chapter.
Unlink Odd and Even Headers/Footers and Reset Numbering
Because the document uses 'Different Odd & Even Pages', you must disconnect both the odd and even headers or footers from the front matter before deleting the page numbers.
When 'Different Odd & Even Pages' is enabled, Word treats odd and even headers/footers as completely separate links. If you only unlink the first page of the chapter (an odd page), the even pages remain linked to the front matter, causing their numbers to disappear when the front matter numbers are removed.
Double-click the header or footer area on the first page of your main chapter (immediately following the Next Page section break) to open the Header & Footer menu.
With your cursor in the odd page header or footer, click the 'Link to Previous' button in the ribbon to turn it off. This disconnects the odd pages from the front matter.
Scroll down to the very next page in your chapter (the first even page). Click inside its header or footer, and click 'Link to Previous' again to disable the connection for even pages.
Scroll back up to your front matter pages. Select the page number and press the Delete key. Because the main chapter is unlinked, its page numbers will remain intact.
Go back to the first page of your chapter. Click 'Page Number' in the ribbon, select 'Format Page Numbers', choose 'Start at', and enter '1'.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does deleting one page number in Word delete them all?
By default, Word links headers and footers across all sections of a document. If the 'Link to Previous' setting is active, any change you make in one section (like deleting a page number) applies to the entire document. You must insert a section break and turn off 'Link to Previous' to isolate the changes.
What is a 'Next Page' section break used for in book formatting?
A Next Page section break starts a new section on the following page. It allows you to apply different page layouts, margins, headers, footers, and page numbering styles (such as switching from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers) independently from the preceding section.
How do I format front matter with Roman numerals while the rest of the book uses regular numbers?
First, ensure a section break separates your front matter from the main text. Click into your front matter section, go to Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers. In the Number format drop-down, select Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) and click OK. Do the same in the main text section, but select Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) and set it to 'Start at 1'.
Why am I missing page numbers on only odd or even pages?
If your document has 'Different Odd & Even Pages' enabled, Word maintains two separate header and footer streams. You must insert the page number field into both an odd page footer and an even page footer to ensure continuous numbering throughout the chapter.
