- Product
- SharePoint Online
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Configuring a SharePoint News web part to display specific news posts by filtering them based on custom page metadata.
- Observed behavior
- The Page Properties filter disappears or is replaced by a Managed Property filter depending on the selected news source, making it difficult to filter posts as intended.
Ensure you have Edit permissions for the SharePoint page and that the custom columns you want to filter by are already created in your site's Site Pages library.
Change the News Source to Enable the Page Properties Filter
The Page Properties filter is exclusively available when the News web part is set to pull news from the current site only.
SharePoint dynamically changes the available filtering options based on where the news is coming from. To use local page metadata for filtering, you must restrict the news source to the site where the web part is hosted.
Navigate to the SharePoint page containing your News web part and click the 'Edit' button located at the top right corner of the screen.
Hover over the News web part and click the pencil icon (Edit web part) on the left side to open the property pane.
In the property pane, locate the 'News source' section and select 'This site'. If you select other options, the Page Properties filter will be hidden.
Scroll down to the 'Filter' section, open the dropdown menu, and select 'Page properties'. Choose the property name and the specific value you want to filter by.
Once the preview shows the correct filtered news posts, click 'Republish' at the top right to make your changes visible to all users.

Use Managed Properties to Filter Across Multiple Sites
If your news source is set to 'Select sites', you must use Managed properties instead of Page properties to filter your content.
Seamlessly Manage and Edit SharePoint Documents with WPS Office
While SharePoint is excellent for hosting intranet pages and managing team sites, you still need a reliable suite to create and edit the actual documents stored within it. WPS Office is a lightweight, highly compatible, and free alternative to Microsoft Office that easily handles documents downloaded from your SharePoint libraries.
- 1. Download Your SharePoint File: Navigate to your SharePoint document library, select the file you want to edit, and download it to your local computer.
- 2. Open with WPS Office: Launch WPS Office and open the downloaded file to enjoy full formatting compatibility and robust editing tools.
- 3. Save and Re-upload: Save your edits locally and upload the updated document back to your SharePoint library to keep your team synced.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Page Properties filter missing in my News web part?
The Page Properties filter is context-sensitive. It only appears when the News source is set to 'This site'. If you select 'Select sites' or 'Recommended for current user', the filter options change, and 'Managed property' is displayed instead.
Can I select an individual news post from another site using the News web part?
No. The SharePoint News web part can display news from an entire selected site, but it does not support picking a single, individual post from a different site. It is designed to aggregate entire sites or filter by metadata.
What is the difference between Page properties and Managed properties in SharePoint?
Page properties are local metadata columns created within a specific site's Pages library. Managed properties are search-driven properties that are mapped in the SharePoint admin center and can be queried across the entire SharePoint environment or multiple sites.
