How to Use Microsoft 365 Online Archive in Outlook LTSC
Product
Outlook LTSC
Device & OS
not provided
Scenario
Setting up a Microsoft 365 account in Outlook LTSC and attempting to view archived emails.
Observed behavior
The Online Archive access depends on administrative mailbox provisioning and whether Outlook is configured in Cached Exchange Mode or Online Mode.
Before you start

Ensure your Microsoft 365 account has an active license that includes desktop Office applications, and verify with your IT admin that the In-Place Archive is enabled for your mailbox.

Solution 1Recommended

Configure Microsoft 365 Account and Switch to Online Mode

Use this method to add your account normally and disable Cached Exchange Mode to ensure the Online Archive is visible.

Outlook LTSC fully supports connecting to Microsoft 365 accounts. However, the In-Place Online Archive may not load properly if Outlook is set to use Cached Exchange Mode. Forcing Outlook into Online Mode establishes a direct connection to the server.

1
Add your Microsoft 365 account

Open Outlook LTSC, navigate to the 'File' tab, click 'Add Account', and complete the normal sign-in process for your Microsoft 365 email.

2
Access Account Settings

Once added, go back to the 'File' tab, click 'Account Settings', and select 'Account Settings' from the drop-down menu.

3
Disable Cached Exchange Mode

Under the 'Email' tab, double-click your Microsoft 365 account. In the Exchange Account Settings window, uncheck the box that says 'Use Cached Exchange Mode to download email to an Outlook data file'.

4
Restart Outlook

Click 'Next', then 'Done'. Close and restart Outlook LTSC. Your In-Place Online Archive should now appear in the folder pane.

Performance Impact: Running Outlook in Online Mode means every action communicates directly with the server. If you have a slow internet connection, you may experience slight delays when opening emails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Online Archive not showing up in Outlook LTSC?

Your administrator might not have provisioned the In-Place Archive for your mailbox, or your Outlook client is using Cached Exchange Mode, which sometimes prevents the archive from displaying. Switching to Online Mode usually resolves this.

Does Outlook LTSC support all Microsoft 365 features?

No. Outlook LTSC is a perpetual-license version of the software and does not receive ongoing feature updates like Microsoft 365 Apps. However, it still supports basic Exchange connections and Online Archives.

Can I access the Online Archive without an internet connection?

No. The Online Archive is stored directly on the Exchange server. You must have an active internet connection to browse, search, or read emails stored in the In-Place Online Archive.
