Downloading Microsoft 365 does not automatically mean Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are installed. On a Mac, the downloaded package must be opened and the installation completed. After that, the apps appear separately in Applications and Launchpad rather than inside a single Microsoft 365 folder.
Confirm That Microsoft 365 Actually Finished Installing
Open Finder > Downloads and look for a file ending in .pkg. If it is still there and Word is absent from Applications, the download completed but the installer probably did not. Double-click the package and keep the Mac connected to power and the internet.
- If the installer says it completed successfully, continue to Finder > Applications.
- If macOS asks for a password, enter the password for a Mac administrator account—not the Microsoft account password.
- If there is no installer, sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the licensed account and choose Install apps again.
Find and Open the Office Apps on Your Mac

- Open the downloaded Microsoft Office installer package and select Continue through the license and destination screens.
- Select Install, enter the Mac administrator password when prompted, and wait for the success message before closing the installer.
- In Finder, choose Go > Applications. Look for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote as separate apps.
- Open Word. Select Get Started or Sign In, then use the Microsoft account associated with the subscription or assigned work license.
- After Word opens normally, Control-click its Dock icon and choose Options > Keep in Dock if you want a permanent shortcut.
Microsoft’s official installation guide confirms that Mac users must open the installer, finish setup, and then launch an Office app from Launchpad for activation.
Fix a Download That Never Became an Installed App
If the package will not open, delete only that incomplete installer, download a fresh copy from the licensed account, and retry. If the installer succeeds but the apps remain missing, use Finder search for “Microsoft Word” and verify that you did not install under a different macOS volume. Work-managed Macs may block installation; in that case, send the installer name and exact macOS message to the organization’s IT administrator.
Use WPS Office While the Mac Installation Is Resolved
WPS Office cannot finish or activate a Microsoft 365 installation, because that requires Microsoft licensing and the macOS installer. It is a free, lightweight Microsoft Office-compatible suite for creating, opening, editing, and saving DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF files.

WPS Office combines Writer, Spreadsheets, Presentation, PDF tools, and AI-assisted features in a familiar, streamlined interface. It supports common Microsoft Office formats and everyday functions, which makes local document work and migration straightforward. Test macros, specialized add-ins, protected files, and Microsoft-only cloud features before changing a business-critical workflow.
Microsoft 365 Installation FAQs for Mac
Why is Microsoft 365 in Downloads but not in Applications?
The file in Downloads is usually the installer package, not the installed apps. Open the .pkg file, complete every installer screen, and then check Finder > Applications for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Can I drag the Microsoft 365 installer into Applications?
No. Run the installer package and let macOS place each app correctly. Dragging the package itself to Applications does not install Word or Excel.
Why can I see Word in Launchpad but not use it?
Open Word and sign in with the account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription or has an assigned work license. If activation still fails, confirm the license under the same account used to download the installer.
Should I install Office from Microsoft or the Mac App Store?
A Microsoft 365 subscription can activate the Mac App Store versions. A one-time Office license may require the installer supplied by Microsoft, so match the app source to the license type.
