A company rebrand can leave an old project or business name visible in every SharePoint and OneDrive link. The supported solution is not to delete the original tenant. Instead, a Microsoft 365 administrator adds a new onmicrosoft.com domain and schedules a SharePoint tenant rename. This is a high-impact administrative change, so inventory important sites and integrations before running it.

What a Microsoft 365 Tenant Rename Actually Changes

The rename changes the tenant prefix used by SharePoint sites and OneDrive locations. For example, oldbrand.sharepoint.com can become newbrand.sharepoint.com. It does not rename user email addresses, remove the original onmicrosoft.com domain, or convert SharePoint URLs to a custom domain such as company.eu.

If your only goal is a new sign-in or email suffix, add and verify your custom domain in the Microsoft 365 admin center instead. Use the tenant rename only when the SharePoint and OneDrive URLs themselves must reflect the new organization name.

Check Eligibility and Plan for Disruption

Before scheduling the change, read Microsoft’s current SharePoint domain rename documentation. Confirm that your tenant is eligible and review the listed limitations for tenant size, Multi-Geo, special cloud environments, applications, and previous rename history.

  • Assign the right role: use a SharePoint Administrator or Global Administrator account for the preparation and PowerShell work.
  • Inventory dependencies: record business-critical sites, OneDrive locations, Teams-connected sites, Power Automate flows, custom apps, bookmarks, and external sharing links.
  • Choose a change window: users may see temporary access interruptions while individual sites are renamed.
  • Communicate the scope: explain that SharePoint and OneDrive URLs will change, while email addresses remain unchanged.
  • Protect recovery options: export configuration details and preserve copies of business-critical files before the maintenance window.

Rename SharePoint and OneDrive URLs Step by Step

Four-stage Microsoft 365 workflow for renaming SharePoint and OneDrive tenant URLs
Prepare the new domain, review the impact, schedule the rename, and monitor the result.
  1. Add the new onmicrosoft.com domain. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Domains, open the current default onmicrosoft.com domain, and choose Add onmicrosoft domain. Create the new tenant prefix you want to use. Do not use the general Add domain flow for this step.
  2. Keep the old domain in place. Microsoft does not allow the original onmicrosoft.com domain to be removed. Do not try to delete users, sites, or subscriptions to force a rename.
  3. Install or update the SharePoint Online Management Shell. Run PowerShell with an administrator account, then connect to the existing SharePoint admin URL with Connect-SPOService -Url "https://oldbrand-admin.sharepoint.com".
  4. Schedule the supported tenant rename. Run Start-SPOTenantRename -DomainName "newbrand" -ScheduledDateTime "YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS". Enter only the new prefix, not the full sharepoint.com hostname, and use a time that satisfies Microsoft’s scheduling window.
  5. Monitor the operation. Use Get-SPOTenantRenameStatus to check progress. Do not start broad content moves, site address changes, or major permission projects while the rename is running.
  6. Test representative sites. Open the SharePoint admin center, a communication site, a Teams-connected site, and OneDrive for several users. Confirm that the new URLs load and that permissions remain correct.

Important: Microsoft limits how often a tenant can be renamed and does not provide a simple rollback to the original name. Treat the command as a scheduled production change, not a cosmetic setting.

Validate Sites, Links, and Integrations After the Rename

After the status reports success, update links that are not automatically rewritten. Test intranet navigation, Office document links, browser favorites, desktop shortcuts, Power BI sources, Power Automate flows, third-party backup tools, and any application that stores an absolute SharePoint URL. Ask a small group of users to open, edit, sync, and share files before declaring the change complete.

Old URLs may redirect for a limited period, but a redirect is not a long-term content strategy. Replace old links in published pages and documentation, and tell external collaborators to save the new addresses.

Use WPS Office While Microsoft 365 URLs Are Changing

WPS Office cannot rename a Microsoft 365 tenant, alter SharePoint service URLs, or change Microsoft account domains. Those actions must be completed with Microsoft 365 admin tools. WPS Office is still a practical free Microsoft Office-compatible option for working with local DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF files while administrators perform the cloud-side change.

WPS Office free all-in-one suite for documents spreadsheets presentations and PDF files
Use WPS Office to keep local document work moving during Microsoft 365 maintenance.

Its familiar interface supports common writing, spreadsheet, presentation, PDF, and AI-assisted workflows. Compatibility can vary for advanced macros, specialized add-ins, or organization-managed cloud features, so verify complex files before replacing an established Microsoft 365 workflow.

SharePoint Domain Rename FAQs

Can I replace the original onmicrosoft.com tenant domain completely?

No. The initial onmicrosoft.com domain remains attached to the tenant. You can add another onmicrosoft.com domain and use the supported SharePoint tenant rename process, but you cannot delete the original tenant domain.

Does a SharePoint domain rename change Microsoft 365 email addresses?

No. The operation changes SharePoint and OneDrive URLs; it does not rename Exchange email addresses. Update email domains separately in the Microsoft 365 admin center if your rebrand requires it.

Will old SharePoint and OneDrive links keep working after the rename?

Microsoft provides redirects for many old URLs, but administrators should still update bookmarks, embedded links, workflows, and integrations. Microsoft states that old-domain redirects expire after one year.

Can I use my custom .com or .eu domain inside SharePoint site URLs?

SharePoint and OneDrive service URLs use an onmicrosoft.com-based tenant prefix. A custom domain can be used for email and sign-in addresses, but it does not replace the SharePoint service URL format.
