Fix Excel Worksheet Appearing Blank and Cannot Add Rows
Question details
The user is working with a spreadsheet containing approximately 19,000 rows, but the entire area below the existing data appears completely blank, and the system prevents adding any additional rows.

- Scenario
- Appending new data to a large dataset and navigating to the bottom of the worksheet.
- Observed behavior
- The space below the data is visually blank, and the user is unable to add or insert new rows, leading to confusion about whether an absolute row limit has been reached or a specific setting is activated.
Before proceeding, check if your worksheet is protected by navigating to the Review tab; worksheet protection can restrict formatting changes and prevent you from unhiding rows.
Unhide All Rows in the Worksheet
The most common reason a worksheet appears completely blank at the bottom is that the remaining empty rows have been accidentally hidden.
Excel files can support over a million rows. If you are stuck at 19,000 rows, you haven't hit the software's limit. Hiding rows removes them from view without deleting them, which creates a large blank area and restricts you from inserting new ones until they are revealed.
Click the 'Select All' triangle button located at the top-left corner of the worksheet, where the row numbers and column letters intersect. Alternatively, press 'Ctrl + A' on your keyboard.
Right-click anywhere on the row number headings on the left side of the screen, and select 'Unhide' from the context menu. The hidden blank rows will reappear.
Reset Row Height to a Visible Value
If unhiding the rows does not solve the issue, the row height for the blank area might have been manually or accidentally set to zero.
Manage Large Datasets Seamlessly with WPS Spreadsheet
Easily handle large files with thousands of rows without formatting glitches. WPS Spreadsheet allows you to intuitively unhide rows, adjust formatting, and analyze massive amounts of data efficiently.
- 1. Open the file in WPS Spreadsheet: Launch WPS Office and open your large dataset.
- 2. Select all data: Click the triangle icon in the top-left corner to select the entire sheet.
- 3. Unhide rows: Right-click the row numbers on the left and choose 'Unhide' to restore the missing gridlines.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum number of rows allowed in a spreadsheet?
Modern spreadsheet applications, including Excel and WPS Spreadsheet, support up to 1,048,576 rows per worksheet. If you cannot add more rows but are well below this limit, the remaining rows are likely hidden.
Why did my blank rows disappear automatically?
Rows generally do not hide automatically. This usually happens if you've applied a data filter that excludes blank cells, grouped rows and collapsed them, or accidentally dragged the row height to zero.
Can I unhide just a specific section of hidden rows instead of the whole sheet?
Yes. To unhide a specific section, select the row header immediately above the hidden section and drag down to the row header immediately below it. Then right-click the highlighted area and select 'Unhide'.
