- Scenario
- Editing documents online using the web-based version of Microsoft Word.
- Observed behavior

Microsoft Word for the web utilizes a simplified layout in Editing view to improve browser performance, which intentionally hides headers, footers, and page margins. You will need to switch views to see them.
Preview Headers and Footers Using Reading View
Since headers and footers are hidden during active editing on the web, switching to Reading View allows you to see how your document's layout actually looks.
While you cannot currently display headers and footers continuously in the web Editing view, you can easily toggle to a view that renders the full page layout.
Open your document in Word for the web and click on the 'View' tab located in the top ribbon.
Click on 'Reading View'. The document will reload in a mode that displays the full layout, including your headers, footers, and page margins.
When you are done reviewing the layout, click 'Edit Document' and select 'Edit in Browser' to return to the simplified Editing view.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I see my header and footer in Word for the web?
Word for the web uses a simplified Editing view to optimize performance and typing speed in web browsers. Because of this, complex layout elements like headers, footers, and page margins are hidden until you switch to Reading View or print preview.
How do I add or edit a header in Word for the web if it is hidden?
You can add or modify them by going to Insert > Header & Footer. A temporary editing panel will drop down at the top or bottom of the page, allowing you to type your content. The panel will collapse again once you click back into the main document body.
Will headers and footers created on the web show up when printed?
Yes. Even though they remain hidden in the standard Editing view, any headers, footers, or page numbers you add in Word for the web are securely saved to the document. They will appear correctly when you print the file, download it as a PDF, or open it in a desktop Word processor.
