- Scenario
- Creating new presentation slides based on a custom Slide Master design.
- Observed behavior
- New slides do not display the background graphics, shapes, or placeholders that were previously added in the Slide Master view.
Verify that 'Hide Background Graphics' is not accidentally checked on your individual slides by right-clicking the slide background and opening the Format Background pane.
Place Graphics on the Top-Level Parent Slide Master
Use this solution if elements are only showing up on specific layouts instead of applying globally to the entire presentation.
In Slide Master view, there is a hierarchy. The largest thumbnail at the very top is the 'Parent Master,' while the smaller thumbnails below are 'Child Layouts.' If you place shapes or graphics on a child layout, they will only appear when that specific layout is used.
Navigate to the 'View' tab on the top ribbon and click on 'Slide Master'.
Scroll to the very top of the left navigation pane and click on the largest slide thumbnail (the Parent Master).
Add your graphics, shapes, or background elements to this parent slide. Adjust their positioning as needed.
Click 'Close Master View' on the Slide Master tab. Insert a new slide to verify the graphics now appear.

Properly Insert Placeholders into Child Layouts
Use this method if your picture placeholders are missing on newly added slides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the background graphics hidden on just one slide?
You likely have 'Hide background graphics' enabled on that specific slide. Right-click the slide background, select 'Format Background', and uncheck the 'Hide background graphics' box.
Can I have different graphics for my title slide vs. my content slides?
Yes. Instead of placing graphics on the top-level Parent Master, place the specific graphics onto the individual 'Title Slide Layout' and a different set of graphics on the 'Title and Content Layout' in the Slide Master view.
Why can't I edit text in a text box added to the Slide Master?
If you insert a standard 'Text Box' into a Slide Master, it acts as static background text (like a watermark) on normal slides. To create editable text areas for normal slides, you must use 'Insert Placeholder' > 'Text' instead.
