How to Show the Missing Notes Pane in PowerPoint Normal View
Question details
The user needs to restore the Notes pane in PowerPoint Normal view, which appears to be missing even when the Notes button is toggled on.

- Product
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Editing a presentation in Normal view and needing to view or add speaker notes at the bottom of the slide.
- Observed behavior
- The Notes pane is hidden or collapsed at the bottom of the workspace despite the feature being active.
Ensure you are currently in Normal view (go to the View tab and click Normal), as the Notes pane is not accessible in Slide Sorter or Reading View.
Drag the Slide Border to Reveal the Notes Pane
The most common reason for a missing Notes pane is that it has been accidentally collapsed. You can easily drag it back into view.
When the Notes pane is resized too far down, it collapses into the bottom border of the PowerPoint window. Even if the Notes button is turned on, the pane will remain hidden until it is manually expanded.
Move your mouse pointer to the very bottom border of the slide workspace, just above the status bar.
Wait for your mouse cursor to change into a double-headed arrow with horizontal lines in the middle.
Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the border upward to expand and reveal the Notes pane.

Toggle the Notes Button in the Status Bar
If dragging the border doesn't work, toggling the Notes feature off and back on can sometimes force the pane to reappear.
Repair Microsoft 365 or Update Office
If the Notes pane remains completely unresponsive or missing, repairing the Office installation or installing updates can resolve underlying software glitches.
Easily Manage Presentation Notes with WPS Presentation

- 1. Open your presentation: Launch WPS Presentation and open your .pptx or .ppt file.
- 2. Access Normal View: Navigate to the View tab on the top ribbon and ensure 'Normal' is selected.
- 3. Use the Notes pane: Click the 'Click to add notes' area directly below your current slide to start typing your speaker notes instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Notes pane disappear in PowerPoint?
The Notes pane usually disappears if it was accidentally dragged all the way down to the bottom of the screen, essentially collapsing it. It can also vanish if the 'Notes' toggle button on the Status Bar was accidentally clicked off.
Can I print my PowerPoint slides with the notes included?
Yes. Go to File > Print. Under the Settings section, click the layout dropdown (which usually defaults to 'Full Page Slides') and select 'Notes Pages'. This will print each slide with its accompanying notes printed below it.
How do I view my notes while presenting without the audience seeing them?
You can use Presenter View. Go to the Slide Show tab and check the box for 'Use Presenter View'. When connected to a second monitor or projector, your audience will see the full slides, while your screen will display the current slide, upcoming slides, and your speaker notes.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to open the Notes pane?
There is no default keyboard shortcut assigned specifically to open or close the Notes pane in PowerPoint. You must manually click the 'Notes' button on the Status Bar or go to the View tab to click 'Notes Page'.
