Create Custom Theme Colors Using PowerPoint for Mac
Word for Mac lacks the ability to create custom theme colors, but you can create and save them in PowerPoint to use across all Office apps.
Due to platform limitations, Word for Mac does not include the built-in option to customize theme colors. However, because Office applications share theme profiles, you can use PowerPoint for Mac as a bridge to achieve this.
Launch Microsoft PowerPoint on your Mac and open a new blank presentation.
Navigate to the View tab on the top ribbon and click on Slide Master.
Click the Colors drop-down menu in the Background group, then select Customize Colors at the bottom.
Set your desired custom theme colors, give your new theme a recognizable name, and click Save.
Close PowerPoint and open Word for Mac. Your newly saved custom theme colors will now be available under the Design tab.

Switch from Word for the Web to the Desktop App
Word for the web is a simplified version and intentionally does not include the Design tab.
Enable the Design Tab in Ribbon Settings (Windows Desktop)
If you are using the Windows desktop app and the Design tab is missing, it might be hidden in your customized ribbon settings.
Use WPS Office for a Complete and Seamless Desktop Experience
If missing features in Microsoft 365 web or Mac versions are slowing down your workflow, consider switching to WPS Office. It provides a fully-featured, free desktop suite with complete design capabilities without the frustrating platform limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Design tab missing in Word for the web?
Word for the web is a streamlined version of the desktop application designed for quick edits and basic formatting. Advanced document structuring features, including the Design tab, are excluded to keep the web application fast and lightweight.
Can I customize theme colors directly in Word for Mac?
No, Word for Mac does not currently support creating custom theme colors directly within the app. You must use PowerPoint for Mac to create and save the theme, which will then automatically sync to Word.
Where are my saved custom themes located?
Once created in PowerPoint, your custom themes are automatically saved to your user profile's Document Themes folder. They instantly become accessible in the Design tab of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on that device.
What if the Design tab is missing on my Windows Word desktop app?
It may have been accidentally disabled. You can easily restore it by navigating to File > Options > Customize Ribbon, and ensuring the 'Design' box is checked under the Main Tabs list on the right side.
