- not provided
- Scenario
- An administrator or manager needs to update an existing user's email address that is connected to Microsoft Teams via a university or organizational account.
- Observed behavior
- Account information in Microsoft Teams is synced directly from the organization's directory and cannot be changed natively within the Teams application.
Ensure you have Global Administrator privileges in your Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) tenant, as standard users are restricted from modifying organizational email addresses.
Update the User Account via Microsoft Entra ID
Because Teams syncs user identities from your organization's directory, administrators must update the email address directly in Microsoft Entra ID to reflect the change.
Microsoft Teams does not allow direct editing of organizational email addresses within the client interface. All user identity information is centrally managed and governed by Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD). When an update is made in the directory, it will eventually sync to all associated Microsoft 365 services.
Navigate to the Azure portal (https://portal.azure.com) in your web browser and sign in using your Global Administrator credentials.
From the left-hand navigation menu or the main dashboard services list, select 'Microsoft Entra ID' (formerly Azure Active Directory).
In the left menu, click on 'Users' and then select 'All users'. Use the search bar to find the specific team member whose email address needs to be changed.
Click on the user's name to open their profile. Click 'Edit properties' at the top of the page, update the 'User principal name' and 'Email' fields to the new address, and click 'Save'.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a standard user change their own email address in Microsoft Teams?
No, standard users in an organizational, enterprise, or university environment cannot change their own primary email addresses. This action must be performed by an IT administrator through Microsoft Entra ID.
Why hasn't the new email address appeared in Teams after updating Azure AD?
Microsoft 365 services rely on directory synchronization. After an administrator updates the email in Microsoft Entra ID, it can take anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours for the changes to fully propagate to the Teams cache.
Can I have multiple email addresses associated with my Teams account?
Administrators can add multiple email aliases to a user account in Microsoft 365. An alias allows you to receive emails sent to various addresses, but your primary User Principal Name (UPN) remains the singular login identity for Microsoft Teams.
