Ensure you back up all important personal files and sign out of your Microsoft, email, and social accounts before handing over your computer for repair.
Create a Local Standard User Account
A local standard account allows the technician to diagnose and repair basic issues without needing your Microsoft account or personal password.
Creating a separate local account is the most secure method to grant a technician access to your computer. It keeps your personal files, browser history, and saved passwords isolated from the repair environment.
Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon, or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
Click on 'Accounts' in the left-hand menu (or main screen), then select 'Other users' or 'Family & other users'.
Click the 'Add account' button next to the 'Add other user' section.
In the popup window, click the 'I don't have this person's sign-in information' link, then on the next screen select 'Add a user without a Microsoft account'.
Enter a descriptive username, such as 'RepairTech', and set a temporary password. Click 'Next' to finish creating the account.

Secure and Manage Your Documents with WPS Office
While securing your Windows system for repairs, ensure your personal and professional documents are easily accessible and safe. WPS Office provides a lightweight, highly compatible alternative to Microsoft Office, allowing you to seamlessly manage Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without expensive subscriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a technician see my files on a standard local account?
A standard local account has its own user folder. They cannot access the files in your personal user folder (like Documents, Pictures, or Desktop) unless you explicitly grant them permission or place the files in a Public folder.
How do I delete the temporary account after the repair is done?
Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users, click on the temporary account name (e.g., RepairTech) to expand the options, and select 'Remove'. This will completely delete the account and any data saved on it.
What if the technician asks for my administrator password?
Many deep system repairs require administrator rights. Instead of sharing your personal password, you can temporarily change the repair account's type to 'Administrator' through Settings > Accounts > Other users > Change account type. Always back up your data first.
