How to Sync Microsoft Planner with a SharePoint Communication Site
Product
Microsoft SharePoint
Device & OS
not provided
Scenario
Attempting to integrate or display tasks from Microsoft Planner within a SharePoint Communication Site.
Observed behavior
Planner cannot natively synchronize with the communication site because these types of sites are not connected to Microsoft 365 groups.
Before you start

Verify that you have Edit permissions on the SharePoint Communication Site and that you have access to an existing Microsoft Planner plan you wish to embed.

Solution 1Recommended

Use a Planner Web Part to Display an Existing Plan

While full synchronization is not supported due to the lack of Microsoft 365 group integration, you can display an existing Planner plan on your site using the Planner web part.

Because SharePoint Communication Sites do not use Microsoft 365 groups by default, they cannot host a native Planner plan. However, if your tenant allows it, you can bypass this limitation by embedding a view of a plan that already exists elsewhere.

1
Edit the SharePoint page

Navigate to your SharePoint Communication Site and click the 'Edit' button at the top right of the page.

2
Add a new web part

Hover your mouse over or below an existing web part and click the '+' (Add a new web part) icon.

3
Select the Planner web part

In the web part search box, type 'Planner' and select the Planner web part from the results.

4
Choose an existing plan

In the web part property pane, select 'Select an existing plan', choose the plan you want to display from the dropdown menu, and republish your page.

Tenant Restrictions: If you do not see the Planner web part, your SharePoint administrator may have restricted its availability in your tenant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why aren't Planner and SharePoint Communication Sites directly integrated?

SharePoint Communication Sites are designed for broadcasting information and are not associated with Microsoft 365 groups. Microsoft Planner relies on Microsoft 365 groups for its underlying permissions and native synchronization features.

Can I create a new Planner plan directly from a Communication Site?

No. Because Communication Sites lack Microsoft 365 group integration, you cannot generate a new plan directly from the site. You must create the plan separately in Planner or a Team site, and then embed it using the Planner web part.

Where can I request native Planner integration for Communication Sites?

You can submit your feature requests and workflow ideas directly to Microsoft through the official SharePoint Online Feedback community portal.
