Device & OS

Scenario
Viewing or editing a document with comments and tracked changes enabled in the Review feature.
Observed behavior
The document view shifts to the left, and in some instances, comments or tracked changes fail to display properly in the Review pane.
Before you start

Check your document to see if the right margin is being occupied by revision balloons, as this reserved space forces the main document layout to shift left.

Solution 1Recommended

Hide Markup to Center the Document View

Change the tracking display settings to hide the markup area, which restores the document to the center of your screen.

When 'All Markup' is selected, Word automatically reserves space on the right side of the screen to display comments and revisions in balloons. This pushes the main document layout to the left. Disabling the markup view centers the page again.

1
Open the Review Tab

Launch your document in Word and navigate to the 'Review' tab on the top ribbon.

2
Locate Tracking Settings

Find the 'Tracking' group within the Review ribbon.

3
Change Markup Display

Click the 'Display for Review' drop-down menu (which may currently say 'All Markup') and select 'No Markup'.

Tracked Changes are Still Active: Selecting 'No Markup' only changes how the document looks on your screen. It does not accept or reject the tracked changes, nor does it delete comments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Word document shift to the left?

This usually happens because Word allocates space on the right side of the screen for the balloons that display comments and tracked changes. Hiding the markup or viewing the document in Print Layout without balloons will re-center the text.

How can I view comments without the document shifting off-center?

You can change the tracking settings to show revisions inline instead of in balloons. Go to the Review tab, click 'Show Markup', select 'Balloons', and choose 'Show All Revisions Inline'.

Will selecting 'No Markup' delete my tracked changes?

No, switching to 'No Markup' only hides the revisions from your current view. To permanently remove them, you must use the 'Accept' or 'Reject' buttons in the Review tab.

Can I center a document while keeping the review pane open?

Yes, you can open the Reviewing Pane vertically on the left side of the screen. This distributes the workspace more evenly, though the main document will still adjust to fit the remaining screen space.
