Can Microsoft 365 Personal Be Purchased as a Lifetime License?
Question details
The user wants to know if Microsoft 365 Personal offers a lifetime, one-time purchase option and how switching to a different Office version might affect their existing stored content.
- Product
- Microsoft 365 Personal
- Device & OS
- not provided
- Scenario
- Evaluating licensing options after years of annual Microsoft 365 Personal subscription renewals in search of a one-time purchase alternative.
- Observed behavior
- Currently paying monthly or annually for Microsoft 365 Personal and seeking a way to purchase it outright once without losing data.
Before making any changes to your subscription, check your current OneDrive cloud storage usage under your Microsoft account, as moving away from Microsoft 365 may reduce your available storage limit from 1TB to 5GB.
Switch to a One-Time Purchase Edition like Office 2021 or 2024
Since Microsoft 365 Personal is strictly subscription-based, you must buy a standalone Office product to get a lifetime license.
Microsoft 365 Personal does not offer a lifetime license. It operates entirely on a subscription model (billed monthly or annually) that includes premium apps, continuous feature updates, and 1TB of cloud storage.
If you prefer a one-time purchase, Microsoft offers standalone versions like Office 2021 (and the upcoming Office 2024). Keep in mind that these lifetime licenses do not include ongoing feature updates or the 1TB OneDrive storage provided by the Microsoft 365 subscription.
Log into your Microsoft account online and check your OneDrive storage to ensure you have less than 5GB of data, as losing the subscription drops your limit.
Buy a one-time license for Office Home & Student or Office Home & Business 2021 (or 2024) directly from the Microsoft Store or an authorized retailer.
Go to your Microsoft Account dashboard, navigate to 'Services & subscriptions', select your Microsoft 365 Personal plan, and turn off recurring billing.
Open the Control Panel or Settings on your computer, go to 'Apps' or 'Programs and Features', and uninstall the Microsoft 365 application suite.
Go back to 'Services & subscriptions' in your Microsoft account, locate your newly purchased one-time Office license, and click 'Install'.
Switch to WPS Office for a Free Lifetime Solution
If you want to stop paying annual subscription fees for Microsoft 365 without spending heavily on Office 2021 or 2024, WPS Office is the perfect lightweight alternative. It provides powerful Writer, Spreadsheet, and Presentation tools with excellent Microsoft format compatibility for free.
- 1. Download the software: Visit the official WPS Office website and click the download button for your operating system.
- 2. Install WPS Office: Run the lightweight setup wizard to install the software on your Windows PC, Mac, or mobile device.
- 3. Open existing files: Launch WPS Office; it will automatically recognize and open your existing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents without formatting loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my files if I cancel my Microsoft 365 Personal subscription?
Files saved locally on your computer's hard drive will not be affected. However, if you rely on the 1TB OneDrive storage included with Microsoft 365, your capacity will drop to the free 5GB limit. Any cloud files exceeding 5GB may be inaccessible or read-only until you download and delete them.
Is Microsoft Office 2021 the same as Microsoft 365?
No. Office 2021 is a classic one-time purchase that gives you a lifetime license for a single computer, but it does not receive new feature updates. Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that includes 1TB of cloud storage, multi-device support, and continuous feature updates.
Do one-time purchase versions of Office include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint?
Yes, one-time purchases like Office 2021 Home & Student include classic lifetime versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. However, they do not include premium cloud features or additional PC-only apps like Access or Publisher, which are exclusive to the Microsoft 365 subscription.
