- Scenario
- Collecting data or feedback where respondents might need to modify their answers after an anonymous submission.
- Observed behavior
- Form respondents are unable to modify their answers once they have clicked the submit button anonymously.
Before adjusting your form settings, decide whether strict respondent anonymity or the ability to edit submissions is more important for your data collection needs.
Require Sign-in and Enable Response Editing
Since anonymous users cannot edit responses, you must change the form settings to require sign-in if you want respondents to be able to edit their submissions.
Microsoft Forms does not track the identity of anonymous users, making it impossible to link a submitted response back to the person who filled it out. Therefore, anonymous editing is fundamentally not supported.
To enable editing, you must collect respondent identities. If a user needs to correct an anonymous form, their only option is to submit a completely new response.
Open your form in Microsoft Forms. Click on the 'More form settings' (three dots) icon in the top right corner and select 'Settings'.
Under 'Who can fill out this form', select 'Only people in my organization can respond' or 'Specific people in my organization can respond'. This requires users to sign in.
Check the box next to 'Allow respondents to edit their responses'.
Looking for a Lightweight Alternative to Microsoft Office?
While Microsoft Forms handles surveys, if you need a powerful, free alternative to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for your daily document needs, WPS Office is an excellent choice. It is highly compatible with Microsoft formats, incredibly easy to use, and completely free.
- 1. Download WPS Office: Visit the official WPS website to download the free Office suite.
- 2. Install the application: Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to set up WPS Office on your device.
- 3. Open and edit your files: Launch WPS Office and easily open your existing Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a Microsoft Form anonymous but still prevent multiple submissions?
No. To prevent multiple submissions using the 'One response per person' setting, Microsoft Forms requires users to sign in so it can track who has responded, which inherently removes their anonymity.
How can an anonymous user correct a mistake in their submission?
Because their original submission cannot be tracked or edited, the anonymous user will need to fill out and submit the form again with the correct information. The form owner can then manually delete the incorrect entry if they can identify which one it is.
Why is the 'Allow respondents to edit their responses' option grayed out in Microsoft Forms?
This editing option is only available when you have selected 'Only people in my organization can respond' or 'Specific people in my organization can respond'. It is not available if 'Anyone can respond' is selected, as that makes the form anonymous.
